I love Jónsi – so special. But did he actually fly to LA on Monday, tape this, and fly right back to NY? He was at a bar in the East Village an hour ago!

Please take this pouty trio off the Stereogum home page.

Matter of fact Kevin Drew of BSS told me that it was being a young Nick Drake fan and seeing “Pink Moon” in that Volkswagen Cabrio spot years ago that convinced him that the end had come. The end that is of ‘indie’ artists music not being used to shill for cars and such. On the other hand as Jessica points out, and Kevin concurs, having a bunch of new people discover Drake was not a bad thing.

L! A! L! A! My favorite song on Sisterworld. The bouncing slacker verse actually is a little Wavves-reminiscent. As for this being shocking, a dripping bag of….something….is a long way from a ginger kid getting shot in the head. Give me creepy yuppie any day over grotesque MIA polemic. As for…nude? We need more nudity in videos!! Naked > Violent. Naked > pretty much anything.

Damian says that a boycott:
“presupposes not only that the people like your band are incapable of coming to the reasonable idea about this bill, but that they are in favor of this bill”
No Damian, it doesn’t. It presupposes that a boycott is capable of inflicting economic/ cultural damage on a state or entity, to the point where those hurt by the boycott will respond/ change their ways/ pressure their elected representatives to do so/ vote them out of office. Either you believe in boycotts or you don’t. Damian says he believe boycotts “are only effective in certain situations” but does not say what those situations are. Iran? North Korea? Cuba? I’d boycott Arizona in a heartbeat before any of those. And no one is saying don’t go there and hand out fliers, speak, march, whatever (though spend as little money in the state as possible while doing it) just don’t play there. Meantime, the Phoenix Suns just advanced in the playoffs. Their opponents, the San Antonio Spurs, would do right by their massive Hispanic fan base if they refused to travel to Arizona over this fascist law. That would put the NBA in a pickle.

Either you believe boycotts are a legitimate / potentially effective tool or you don’t. I do. Someone’s got to take the first step. Stars has, more power to them. Believe me Damian bigger entities will get on board with a boycott. And Phoenix will listen. Barack needs to step up way more forcefully though.

I was at that Plaid throwdown as well. And look at her now….all getting up early and appearing this morning on “The View”. Next…PTA meetings? Guess it’s a tad late for that.

C’mon now. Annie Clark, David Byrne, Andrew VanWyngarden, Jonathan Pierce aren’t exactly stretches in the dress-up department. Why not just throw in Karen Elson, Joanna Newsom and Julian Casablancas? On the other hand, get say, Dan Deacon, Titus Andronicus, Skerrit Bwoy, Damian from Fucked Up, and Harlem to dress up in $1500 suits. Then we’ll talk, GQ.

yes, Gavras’s composition of the body bits in the air is quite remarkable. Please.

Effective? It’s obscene. As was/ is the violence inflicted on Tamils. But don’t fight violence by depicting it. Ridiculously heavy handed. You think we don’t know there is genocide in the world? You think we don’t know there are unspeakably horrible things being perpetrated against ethnic groups AS WELL AS women, homosexuals, and dissidents the world over? You think I don’t realize that the US is hardly blameless when it comes to fascist behaviour (see: Arizona immigration law)? Depicting kids of any ethnicity being shot in the head and blown to bits is not “effective”, it’s guignol shock-effect bullshit.

Oh dear. Romain and Maya – we get it a thousand times over. I love it when Chris earlier suggested she could have done this more subtly. You think? That woman wouldn’t know subtle if it hit her over the head with a bottle of Seagram’s. I got no problem with your brown shirts wearing US flags, yes we know America can be thugs (see: Arizona immigration law). And round up the ginger kids for mass murder (Shaun White and Prince Harry would be goners in this world) – what could that possibly be a reverse-signifier for? But show the boy being shot in the head? Show the limbs? yada yada. NSFW? NSF subtlety, decency, taste, or winning points with Homeland Security. Of course that’s nothing Bronfman bucks can’t fix.

Why do you suppose it was EW that got this? Anyway it’s a lot prettier than the weird cardboard cutout guy ads for our lottery.

Anyone else find it annoying that the morning benders refuse to use caps in their name? I kinda do. ee cummings affectation. Or are all cap names (YACHT, HEALTH, WHY?) more annoying? All caps implies acronym. No caps implies what….false humility? Love the band though. And Twin Sister.

Pitchfork’s allowing Maya to take over their Twitter today was one of the worst ideas they have ever had. (a) she can’t shut up (b) nonsense with wanton disregard for spelling (c) she wrote it in all caps. we get it. you’re loud. I am however surprised she had nothing to say about the Arizona immigration law, Obama’s efforts at Wall St reform, the NBA playoffs and the recent Icelandic volcano. She’s never had any problem soapboxing on any and all topics in the past. Song is OK though.

I love the way she has ditched ‘Love’ and now gone with that old stage name practice of using ones middle-as-surname. Courtney Michelle indeed. What’s wrong with Harrison?

I wondered how many stories it would take til I felt compelled to register with the new ‘Gum in order to comment. So this was a ‘rough’ episode of SNL? I would like to see a smooth one, cuz there ain’t. And MGMT was hands down the most interesting performance of this season. Who’d you nominate? Bieber? Buble? Shakira? Tings? Peas? Ke$ha? Please. Give me shambolic MGMT any day.
