I agree about Damnation, it’s good but it’s the kind of album you really need to be in the mood to listen to. My two favourite albums are Still Life and Ghost Reveries, and I’d probably say Deliverance is my least favourite although I still love and listen to all of them.
(In my opinion) Opeth is the consequence of musical creation without restrictions or genre limitations. Musical evolution in its purest form. The musical journey of Opeth coincides with Mikael’s journey through life, each album being a portrait of which direction Mikael’s free musical creativity was going at that time. And I feel as though Mikael has truly found himself in the past few years with his music, with Watershed and this new track being such daring and bold steps, yet so confident.
This style of unrestricted musical creativity is the reason I love Opeth, not necessarily because of any certain “sound”. Obviously Heritage was written in this way, meaning I will love this album as I love every other one. I’m sure the band’s sound will continue to morph, twist and evolve in the future, and I’ll be sticking with them the whole time.
