Finally! A version of Flashing Lights that my mom will let me watch!
“And if you threw an orgy
Invited everyone you knew
You would see
The biggest dick would be on me
And the mouth attached would say:
Mff-nnp-mfph-nppff-mmfffph-npmf-mmmfnmnmnmfp”
Everything sounds good with the Vitamin C beat.
Now it’s only something that used to grow?
It’s weird what kids will pick up on.
I was working on a mix CD last summer, and I played it in the car a few times in the process. My then 20 month old daughter really connected with the Eleanor Friedberger song “Roosevelt Island”, and for about two weeks, she would demand “and it goes and it goes speakers!” every time we got in the car. She would come close to tears if she had to wait her turn to hear it.
It just makes me smile to think of Eleanor Friedberger sitting at the mixing board putting the final touches on her record, not knowing that a one year old in North Carolina was about to become one of her most rabid fans.
Nootropics is great, too!
I really dig the track, but that guy’s thighs are bugging me out.
Ugh – “they’re”, not “their”. Sorry, internet.
I don’t understand. Are you talking about production? Songwriting? What exactly is “hypey”?
Sounds like a natural evolution from the last record, based one my first listen. The songwriting seems as solid as ever, and it sounds like their getting more comfortable introducing new production elements. It also seems like they are tapping a bit into the spirit of their Ticonderoga days, which sounds pretty nice to me.
Nina Nastasia’s “The Blackened Air” should sneak onto this list somewhere.
I wouldn’t cry if there were more Future Islands and Drums on this list.
Oh man. Horsedrawn Wishes was good, but Shoulder Voices was my jam. And that’s when Kevin Shields’ brother Jimi was still in the band.
I might need to go listen to that right now.

Well, you convinced me to give it a listen again. It’s aged better than I remember. I don’t think it quite reaches the heights of the first two, but I’m glad it’s on my speakers now. Thanks!
