My recommendation, wait for Fun Fun Fun Fest. The last two years have offered a variety of great bands at a fraction of the cost. Plus, no crowds and no parking and transportation issues.
Dan looks like Casey Tatum from the Uncle Muscles Hour in the above pic.
Ron, you should be declared the official sponsor or the 2009 AC vs. GB debate.
Not to mention the best use of a children’s choir in recent memory. I hear some vespertine influence in the way they used those kids on the album.
Comparing this to MPP is ridiculous, as the only thing they seem to have in common is hype. They are two completely different artists with two completely different sounds. Veckatimest is a textural masterpiece with all the nuance of Yellow House with a newly added pop flare (and Bear’s druming does make the album). But MPP is a totally different concept, a wall of sound that coalesces so much with each listen that eventually, it sounds like a solitary instrument playing one long, evolving melody (at least to me). They are both groundbreaking albums that sound entirely unique. To take away credit from one based upon the brilliance of the other is just silly. And while it’s great to see 2 established bands at the top of their game, let’s not forget that there are 9 months left for a new band to come and sweep us off our feet. Now, let’s start hyping the next Spoon album so that they actually begin making one.

Let me preface this by saying that I love Animal Collective and MPP, but some bands are just not live bands. AC’s notorious for being a bit alienating live, perhaps even more so when they were playing more ‘traditional’ intruments. I honestly kind of like seeing them restrained by this more sample based material (kind of reminds me of the electronica shows I went to in the late 90s, sans the pacifier-sucking raver kids). That said, their live performances are always interesting, but not necessarily good. But who cares when they’re coming out with a great album every year and a half.
