I’m not sure of Doherty’s intentions here, but first of all, Deutschlandlied is not the Nazi Anthem: It is still very much the national anthem of Germany. ‘Germany, Germany above all’, back when it was written, expressed a desire to unite the German Confederation. The Horst-Wessel-Lied was written by a Nazi activist made into a martyr by the Nazi propagandists and was sung after the first stanza of Deutschlandlied. Today they only sing the third stanza not because the first stanza is racist but because it’s jingoism outdated by a century. Nietzsche called it the dumbest phrase in the world. So maybe he is just dumb and maybe not racist?
