I can remember with clarity the first time I heard Jenny Lewis’ voice — the place, the time of day, what I was wearing. It was during ninth grade, one weekday after school, in my friend Lauren’s basement, when her cool older brother’s cool girlfriend pulled up a Postal Service song and played it through the speakers of a desktop computer. At the time, it felt like Lewis’ voice floated with defiance. Her voice also felt novel, at least then, to me, in 2004. I can say with complete confidence this was the first time I heard a female voice in “indie music” — a phrase I did not know or understand, my main musical epiphanies at that point having come from the hyper-masculine, hyper-mediocre Long Island emo scene, a world where women only exist as mere fan-girls, or cruel song subjects for whiney heartbroken dudes.

Willis Earl Beal has launched a new video series, appropriately titled “Church Of Nobody.” There will be eight parts in total; so far Beal has released episode one, featuring a three-song set of his own music, plus a second episode featuring King Krule. Check out both episodes below.

There’s a new episode of Austin City Limits, featuring Vampire Weekend and Grizzly Bear. On the show, Vampire Weekend performs songs from Modern Vampires of the City; Grizzly Bear plays from Shields. Check it out below.

Oh wow interesting. going to try listening thru w/ that narrative in mind. I think the ending is what always made me think of it as a love triangle — “i am flawed if i’m not free, and your husband will never leave you, he will never leave you for me.”

Oh wow. good catch. i remember having a conversation with the folks i mentioned, them saying, “this is jenny lewis singing, you’d like her” and listening to the whole postal service record. and i know i’ve watched her and ben gibbard do this one live before so i always assumed it was her singing on the record. thanks for clarifying this for me!

it was such a great festival. sadly i don’t think i can make it down to florida this year

usually the illegal aspect is that they sometimes violate noise ordinances

there’s nothing wrong with refusing to vote. it’s up to the individual to do (or not do) what they feel strongly about.
