While the music is awesome, I can’t say I’m a total fan of the sound of this record, it’s a step down from the previous two. Here is the main problem I have with it: it has that STUPID AND AWFUL kick drum overly compressed and mixed almost louder than the rest of the drum kit sound. Bad. So many metal bands make dreadful sounding records (IMHO) with that bad drum sound being a main problem. I can’t ignore it, that stupid fake sound that makes it seem like the drummer is playing and a separate synthetic kick drum is playing along with him. The kick is mixed louder than the kit! Shitty. I know it may seem petty to some, but I can’t ignore it. I’ll sit through it, though, because the songs are soooooo damn good. Not a bad one in the bunch.
Sorry, but the previous two albums sounded better to me, Steve Albini’s production delivering the fantastic fidelity of “that’s how the band really sounds in the room” sound. Endino’s engineering seems to rely a little more on close mic-ing than the sound of the room, but is equally as enjoyable as is Albini’s work with the band. Regardless, the new album may have some of their best songs.
