Well, I must admit I don’t know much about the seal hunt (basically just that I don’t like seeing seals get bludgeoned to death), but as a Canadian, I’ve heard a lot of compelling arguments to preserve it, in the sense that it’s an important part of aboriginal culture, and that to abolish the seal hunt would in some way force certain aboriginal peoples to assimilate and abandon a part of what little tradition they have left. Plus, in certain areas, it’s how a lot of them make a living. In any case, I’m still really unsure of certain facts, but I sure would like to find a more reliable source than Wikipedia to find out more. I’m certainly not going to go to PETA for an objective view on the issue…
If Fucked Up doesn’t win… well, I guess I don’t care that much, but I definitely think they’ve got the clear winner of that bunch.
Telling people what to do with no justification? Hmm… sounds familiar…
The only thing whiter than Vampire Weekend is talking shit about Vampire Weekend.
This type of long, slow, pretentious filmmaking is totally my bag, but I don’t like this video/short very much. Not as painful as it could have been, but it’s still melodramatic, pretentious and completely predictable. I like the concept a lot, but the execution is, yeah, really pretentious. The best part about it I think is the cinematography. Oh, and the song of course.
I’m so psyched for this new record. It probably won’t be a masterpiece, but it sounds like it’ll be great fun. Thanks for the vids!
I should be more surprised by this than I am.
There is so much bullshit surrounding this album. People want soooo badly for it to be great… They’re not even talking about the songs! I think this speaks directly about our generation. We’ll be known as Gen ADD, and deservedly so. We should all get off our computers, wait until May 26th, then go outside, lie down under a tree and listen to Veckatimest. Actually, you can do what you want, but that’s what I’ll be doing.
‘Dumb acceptance’? Like we have a choice. Music is as accessible as running water these days. It always will be from this point on, unless the internet goes the way of radio and television where it is entirely owned by cable companies (which is not that far-fetched I’m afraid). I swear, people would charge for oxygen if they could…
Well if this track is anything to go by, I think T&G will have a pretty good swan song. The only release I’m more looking forward to this year rhymes with schmizzly bear.
I don’t believe that any girl is seriously offended by these comments, especially since we would say the exact same things amongst each other about the likes of Kevin Barnes, Conor Orberst and Andrew Bird… and all jokingly. I mean when someone says they’d “hit that” or whatever, no one takes it seriously. Lighten up!
Holy shit, I love this song. Totally seizure-worthy.
The reason I don’t give a shit about the Grammys and probably never will is that they seem to care much more about getting viewers than they do about music. The minute they start to show that they actually give a fuck about music — any kind of music — maybe I’ll pay attention. As it is, winning a Grammy doesn’t mean shit in terms of prestige or credibility. And it’s going to take a whole lot more than transparent marketting to change that.
I don’t understand what’s so difficult about getting over the hype, slapping on your heaphones and getting lost in good music, which is what Fleet Foxes do for people who like harmony-based folk music with lots of reverb. I don’t think they’re going to change the world, but does the fact that people abuse hyperbole have to ruin my enjoyment of their music? Course not. There will always be dickheads who think their opinion is fact and there’s nothing we can do to change that, so just enjoy. Or not. It’s all subjective, folks. We can still talk about music without coming off as complete morons.
Of course he should pipe in. He posted this on his blog, that’s what blogs are for. You’re saying if there’s something going on that he cares about and has something to say about, then he should just shut up and let things unfold because it’s none of his business? I don’t buy that. He shouldn’t have to censor himself for people who can’t grow up and rise above.
Man, people sure love using Bradford Cox as a punching bag. Doesn’t matter how nice, articulate, smart or right he sounds, it seems people will keep shitting all over him for reasons that have nothing to do with what he’s saying.
This is actually a really good list. I don’t agree with a lot of it, but it’s interesting, in a they-actually-know-what-they’re-talking-about kind of way. Love seeing “Blind” sitting at number one and “The Rip” (which would get my vote for best track of the year), but I’m shocked that El Guincho, Flying Lotus, Fucked Up and Stereolab didn’t make the cut. “Neon Beanbag” surely could have been given a spot over “DVNO” and “Flashing Lights”, both of which were on albums from last year.
Yuck. There isn’t much worse than combining a shameless abuse of the word “like” and the type of judgmental stereotyping exercised here. I still like a couple of their songs as well as their contribution to the Fucked Up album, but I want to revoke my vote for Cassie Ramone as my indie crush…
Kings of Leon had an album this year?
I love these guys. I’ve been listening to the album all year long, but I’m still not tried of any of the songs, not even “A-Punk” or “Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa”. I don’t understand where all the disdain for them comes from. Oh well. Not my loss.
Are you joking? Is this a joke?
Feelies covered it too. Too bad no cover even comes close to the 1969 live version by the VU themselves.
I find songs less interesting once they’ve been in a movie, unless they’re really well placed but that’s rare. It’s just an exposure thing. The common folk won’t seek out things unless they’re right in from of them.
I’m pretty sure “My Girls” used to be called “House”.

So shocked at Fever Ray being in the top 10, but it sounds like they ranked it that high for the accompanying music videos more than for the music itself. And I thought for sure Girls would be in the top 3 (as this band is sort of like P4K?s baby), but I was pleasantly surprised to see The xx that high. I wonder if all the people saying they are boring have listened to XX more than once, because I thought it was boring the first and second time around too, but the songs started to build so much power around the third and fourth listens, and now I think its #3 spot is totally deserved. It?s a very subtle album, but an extremely beautiful and moving one too if you give it a chance.
