I don't know about a Hank/Jesse teamup. Seems highly unlikely. Mike and Jesse, sure. Hank wouldn't need Jesse so much unless he came to testify against Walt and that would not need any drawn out scheming. At most Jesse wears a wire one day and Walt is done. I could totally see Mike talking sense into Jesse if he can get to a point where he (Mike) doesn't have to kill anybody for a while. Jesse just doesn't like murdering people, he's not a psycho/sociopath like Mike and Walt. He just wants Daddy and Daddy to stop fighting/murdering and be nice so they can cook meth and make boucoup money. Mike's pragmatism is bound to have more sustainability than Walt's hubris and that is more likely to coincide with Jesse's desire for nicey nice down the road.
There's definitely a sound but I heard it more as an old timey 60 Minutes stopwatch being stopped. Similar meaning but less over the top. Plus, a gun cocking makes a more distiinctive sound. You don't really need to cock a hand gun these days and that doesn't really make much of a noise. You do cock a pump shot gun but that's a much bigger two part noise.
I should have added. F for Fake shows that Welles has gotta be at the top of the list of famous people dead or alive that would be awesome to hang out with. Most famouses I don't think I'd want to have dinner with but Welles and select few I would. Ultimate dinner party guest list of famous people. 1. Orson Welles 2. Tom Waits 3. Bill Murray 4. Winston Churchill 5. J.R.R. Tolkien 6. Neal Stephenson 7. Stephen Fry 8. David Mitchell (Peep Show not the novelist) Maaaaybe Paul F. Tompkins
F for Fake is pretty great! I love that scene where Welles is having dinner with some pals. Not only does he order steak au poivre but clearly he's eaten an entree already! Round 2! Plus the fact that he's totally messing with you throughout the the film.
It's interesting to me that you hate Life Aquatic so much, Gabe. Your reasons do make sense but it feels like you maybe hated it and didn't give it a second view. I was a bit disappointed coming out of the theater on LAwSZ but on repeated viewing I've come to love it. Anderson's movies, with the exception of Darjeeling (which I liked a lot) all feel like they were may by supremely competent 12 year olds. That's part of what I love about them. I've heard of an interesting theory that Life Aquatic is the movie Max Fischer would have made, given the resources, for Miss Cross. Also, watch some of the old Jacques Cousteau films and Zissou is even better. I also love the cross section sets of Life Aquatic and Moonrise Kingdom. It is true that this is VERY Wes Andersony. But how could he make something that's not? I've heard hatred for Brothers Bloom for ripping Anderson but I loved it for it's own merits without seeing that. I for one love the obsessiveness. I guess he could let go of the Daddy Issue stuff though. Anyhoo, now I'll get to my real point. Moonrise Kingdom felt closer to Fantastic Mr. Fox to me than anything W.A. has done. The caper to free Sam, Scout Master Norton saving HQ, etc. It was pretty full on whimsical if you ask me. I loved how every character took themselves SO seriously even when doing silly things. Plus, it's really hard for me to get bent outta shape about kids free dancing to Francoise Hardy. She is awesome! Possibly I was primed to like it more after reading the interview in pitchfork with W.A. and Randall Poster (musical director on all the W.A. movies) about the meaning of music in his films generally and Noye's Fludde/Hank Sr. particularly in Moonrise. Gave it a personal quality I liked. I used to listen to a Peter and The Wolf, Disney record that explained all the instrumentation and orchestra stuff so it really hit home for me. Not that that should mean anything to anyone else. But the Britten music has a real significance for Anderson, so. . . Again, your reasoning is sound I just didn't react to Moonrise or Life Aquatic in the way you did.
The Police! Stuart Copeland hilariously hates the shit out of Sting. Apparently by the end he would set up his drum kit so the kick drum faced Sting so he could see where SC taped "Fuck You" onto it. Basically Sting is a super douche. Put down the lute asshole!
Oops Donna Darko, I'm stupid
Except it wasn't This weapon and That weapon. It was all the same goo but it did whatever to whoever according to what they wanted to happen next in the movie.
Totally spot on Patriot. Also, David hates everybody secretly but after he gets his head torn off he wants to help not-Ripley all of a sudden? It's kind of a shocker too when David calls out the movie itself for being stupid and not making any kinds of sense. Why the fuck does Not-Ripley want to go to palien home planet to find out why they want to kill her? They just gonna kill her! Why does she want to know so fucking bad? "I guess that's cause you're a robot and I'm a human." NO I call shenanigans! David is confused because Not-Ripley makes no damn sense! Not 'cause he's a robot! One last thing. After her alien abortion, sometimes Not-Ripley is in intense pain and can't move. But she can jump across an increasing gap and outrun the bitten doughnut ship that she could have just sidestepped. Fucking Wile E Coytote shit!
I'm conflicted about this show. I genuinely enjoy it and think it's pretty well written. The guy who plays Nick is for realz funny. But, I also feel like I'm being manipulated by having ZD do all her "adorkable" (I HATE that word) shtick but I'm a sucker for it. It's sorta like when they put Arcade Fire on the Where The Wild Things Are trailers. I know you are pushing my emo/hipster buttons and damn you it's working! I'm guessing what dude is hamfistedly trying to say is that the show presents the idea that we don't have to be ironic about liking dorky shit? Happy Endings has an episode that acually plays this out with insufferable hipsters that wassherface rejects in favor of unironically loving tap dancing or something.
There were times when people cared about stuff. Actually, I suspect Charlie Brooker cares about stuff now. His special on why we should watch The Wire is especially effective. At the same time he is aware that he's just a big goof compared to guys like Jacob Bronowski, whom he sites for the exact reasons Gabe so rightly gives for why Degrasse Tyson matters so much. The Ascent of Man is pretty moving. Bronowski knows from what he speaks. He was a big wig mathematician but quotes William Blake to eulogize a brilliant physicist. Others like James Burke of Connections, Desmond Morris with The Human Animal and David Suzuki with The Nature of Things are also quite compelling. http://www.amazon.com/The-Ascent-Of-Man-Complete/dp/B000772842/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1339010676&sr=8-3
I totally agree with you re: Branson sucks. I never understood why everyone loved him here. He is constantly bullying Sybil. It's not fair at all for him to pressure her to just stop being a product of her environment. This might seem insensitive of me but here goes anyway. It's kind of like what I've seen with young people that travel abroad as missionaries, etc. It was actually part of our training when I was a missionary to be aware of the impulse to get caught up with a local and think you can just leave your life back home all behind because you're in love and it's romantic as hell. I can first hand vouch for how strong that pull can be. But it ends badly almost all the time.
Agreed, as we've discussed before KajusX, the titles do such a great job of serving the story. I can't think of any possible way the show could convey the geography of the world and how it affects the different houses so efficiently as the titles for this show do. I love how you can see Pyke's relation to Winterfell and how those houses would run into each other over the centuries. Also, that Winterfell is the closest stronghold to the Wall and, as Jon Snow points out, the Starks are decended from the First Men and not johnny come lately Andals like the other houses. Then how the perspective shift going from the Wall to Qarth emphasizes the "foreignness" of civilazations outside of the 7 Kingdoms. Plus it's just a handy way to frame the action of the episode. One can start the episode knowing where all the action will take place so as to begin wrapping one's head around how it all fits together from the start.
That was a pretty awesome way of him letting him know he sees through (some of at least) her act. Also, that line about milord vs my lord is in the book but I can't remember who it is that says it.
The show is actually doing a really great job, well the actor is doing a great job too, of giving that glimpse that Theon's heart isn't really into all this cruelty but he feels trapped by his family's crazy pride in being parasitic shitbags and a serious case of inferiority and frustration that he can't get any respect. He's trying to do what he thinks he has to do but can't pull it off. SPOILERISH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We are being given a good view of how he can become the tragically debased character he ends up being. Sure we hate him now and he's always hateable but pathetic at the same time.
" Increasing the supply of oil doesn’t bring down prices." You're gonna have to do more than just assert this to make me take it seriously. The fundamental law of economics is that as supply increases it drives down prices. I'm willing to be convinced. As for Oil Company "subsidies" they get the same tax breaks that any other company gets. They do not get special treatment from the government. Solyndra and others got direct Gov't loans that they defaulted on because they just could not make a product that would sell. Same with the Chevy Volt, nobody is buying them. (btw- the electricity they run on is largely generated by coal burning electrical plants) I'm all for getting rid of the tax breaks, etc. for oil companies as long as the do it across the board for all industries. Corporate Welfare/Crony Capitalism is a real problem and this administration is no better than any other and worse than many. But that's a different issue.
We also have the example of Spain's Gov't subsidizing green tech and it got 'em to near (still possible) financial collapse. Pat Robertson is a clown and doesn't represent serious thought from ANY perspective. Theological, environmental or otherwise. I'm not saying we should abandon green tech. It's just that the current approach isn't working. The Obama administration has made it a big priority (to their credit or fault depending on how you see it) but the companies still fail. I think tax incentives, etc. are a good idea for promoting green tech. We can't just subsidize a weak industry into strength. It the way free economies work. At the same time, the absolutist approach is getting in the way of progress of reducing emissions. Full disclosure: I worked for a lobbying firm that represented electric utilities. There are many advances in burning coal cleanly in particular. Coal plants generate the electricity to power all those Chevy volts that nobody wants to buy. Natural gas is also plentiful and even cleaner. Yet, we have regs that make it prohibitively expensive for a coal plant to upgrade to burn cleaner. We could be producing cleaner energy and bringing costs down. In most of the US people rely on their cars and cannot just decide to drive less. High fuel costs also lead to high food costs (it's got to get to the store somehow) and it's the lower incomes that are hit the hardest. Also, just in general saying There Is NO Argument is not a good way to get people to listen to you. Basically what we hear is, "Just shut up and do what we tell you." I don't think I'm really all that of a rarity of right-leaning acknowledgers of climate change. I read pretty mainstream political magazines (National Review, Weekly Standard, WSJ Editorial Board, not so much Foxnews, their webiste kinda sucks just as a website). I'm not just coming up with this stuff on my own. There are a few apostate climate scientists out there too, like Bjørn Lomborg. The funny thing, he's attacked as if he's some kind of heretic crazy person but his position is that anthropogenic climate change is real, it's just not an "immediate disaster."
I know better than to wade into this but I'm going to anyway. Pat Robertson is increasingly going more and more bonkers over time. Now he's getting all conspiracy theory weird. However, those of us that are skeptical about climate change, are not so much skeptical of the fact that the climate is changing. The main problem is the solution lots of people on the left would like to impose. We're all for clean energy, but right now the tech cannot compete with fossil fuels in the market. Also, we have ways of using fossil fuels that are much cleaner than in the past. In the case of coal plants there are actually barriers (gov't regs) to upgrading an existing plant to make it run cleaner. For folks like Al Gore (who's made shitloads of money off of this stuff btw) and others the solution is to punish fossil fuel companies and subsidize unproductive green tech companies. Solyndra is just one of many companies that took tons of gov't money and failed anyway. Plus, people don't like being told what to do (light bulbs, low flow toilets, etc). This sort of thing can't be just authoritatively imposed without getting pushback. Blocking an oil pipeline might seem like a good idea but it costs regular people jobs, contributes to higher gas prices that working class people can't afford and doesn't stop the oil production anyway. It just get sent to someone else. I actually think there can be a lot of common ground for pro-Green tech advocates and coal, natural gas and even oil companies. The Green-tech just needs more time before it can really take over as a viable energy source. Its advocates are overly impatient. It doesn't really matter how right it may be in concept, the practicality is just not here yet. I think the transition to sustainable energy tech will happen when it is ready. Trying to force it now just creates all kinds of bad unintended consequences and is counterproductive.
I don't think the books are really all that daunting, they're full on page-turners as far as I'm concerned. I'd read the books before I knew there was going to be a series which put me in a sweet spot I think. I still remember most of the big things but the small stuff is a bit fuzzy so I don't notice the little tweaks the show has done. The biggest frustration with having read the books is not being able to talk about where I think the show will go. I'd really like to find a spoiler friendly forum to nerd out in.
Davos is an awesome character!!! He's the Onion Knight because he made a bunch of money smuggling onions or something. Anyhoo, he saved Stannis's narrow arse with his pirate powers at one point so Stannis pardoned him and made him a knight. Then all the finger chopping Singing-Ax pointed out, even though Davos pretty much saved his family's source of power for him. I also concur with Mr. Lewis, Davos is this season's Ned.
I'm guessing it also sorta calls back Eternal Sunshine maybe? I'm psyched to see Fantastic Fear though. Actually, I was more reminded of Bunny and The Bull by the Boosh dudes. Harold Boom is the main dude but all the gang have cameos. Quite good.
Say what you want about their music. I catch myself digging the gothiness. But these dudes know visuals. They may have made the best music video ever. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bGLrrTbF3t8 They're dwarf slaves to a giant Snow White who shoots up the gold dust they mine for her. It's actually the song these awesome kids are covering. Weird as shit, and they still get their BDSM in but strangely moving somehow. I am so conflicted about it. . .
A few things struck me here. First, how can someone have a beef with Wiig? I don't always find her funny on SNL (Gilly makes no sense to me at all) but she's never Jim Carrey level of muggin. It's kinda funny for the author to (correctly in my mind) point out how people making Bridesmaids out to be some kind of feminist triumph being weird. I thought it was funny regardless of "Oh isnt' it great to see womyn being funny!" stuff. But I am a guy so mayby I relate differently to it. But then she gets into Pasternoster as some kind of feminist hero. Both premises seem to shoehorn a socio-political point where there doesn't really need to be one. It seems to me the goal should be that female (and male) artists are judged on the quality of their work regardless of gender role politics. Again, maybe as a guy it's easy for me to say. But it always seems to be female/feminist writers that are pushing the gender role arguments. I can confidently say that guys just don't think about that stuff (blanket generalization) that much. As to Pasternoster I can't really say anything, I've never listened to her band. But I loved Helium back in the day and thoroughly enjoy Sleater-Kinney just 'cause they rock, end of. Also, I'd like to point out PJ Harvey especially for showing a female artists can just do her thing and be well respected for it. I can't think of anything she's put out that was bad. Bjork comes to mind as well. Do they say something about feminism/gender politics I'm missing? Honest question maybe I've got dude blinders on. I'll admit to being someone down on the idea of girls being badasses instrument-wise in the past. I got turned around on that when a band I was in found a girl to play drums. She could put us dudes to shame and hold her own as the only girl in the band. But she did like to play in other bands with all girls as well. Understandable I suppose.
Nice link! It very much reinforces the hilarity of Gabe's take on this photo. He doesn't have a computer or cell phone. Of course he's got people to do that for him as well he deserves. He's earned the right not to sweat it. "The Internet is strange,” he said. The IMDB Web site says that Walken has a film “in production” called “Citizen Brando.” “I have no idea what that is,” he said. Yeh, I've seen some documentary stuff about Speck it is extra effed up. There's footage of him with his boobs out bragging about how they get stoned all the time and all the sex stuff he gets up to. shudder,
Good catch Ryan. I sorta noticed it too. I kept thinking, "Shouldn't we have met Stannis's pain in the arse wife already? Isn't she responsible for bringing in Red Arianna Huffington in the first place? Wasn't it because of the daughter's stone face thing? Or am I mixing that up with someone else. Been a while since I read that part.
OK Professor Geometrygum, your point is well taken. I usually check out during the titles because generally titles are like, duh, the same thing over and over again. I love that you are into it that much. The point that I got out of it wasn't that this world is INSIDE a sphere and doesn't turn, just your perspective of it. What I got out of it was the sense of the geography and how it affects the interactions of the houses. That change of perspective going across the Dothraki Sea shows the foreign-ness of their way of life outside the 7 Kingdoms. I bow to your superior percptiveness. That shit is so effin cool innit?! The actual way they crafted that work of art together for serious is really cool and you're right to point that out. I was just more into what it tells you about the story. Best of both worlds really. It is beautiful in and of itself but also serves the story in really cool way. I went back through each episode and scrolled through each title sequence. I so love that it helps to make sense of things. Like just how far the Wall is from King's Landing explains so much of how Cersei and the gang are so dismissive of Tyrion's warnings and how the King's Road goes way up to Winterfell and they show how Pyke would be under its jurisdiction or where The Twins are in relation to King's Landing and the Eyrie and all that. Love it. Also -Sidebar- I love that northerners have Northern accents generally and southerners have those, etc. Small thing but a great touch.
Shit! I know I misspelled niece. Also, am I the only one that is creeped out by being called "Uncle" or "Aunt" whatever your name is? I didn't mind so much until all my nephews' friends started calling me Uncle Pete too. eeewwww!!! I tell them just to call me by my name but their parents insist on adding the Uncle. They do the same thing with the Gparents. The dang kids have to add Pappa or Mimi to everything even my Mom and Step-Dad chose their GP names expressly to avoid that. Off topic I know but whatevs
Oh God!! I would just be mildly amused by this except my neice and nephew cornered me when their parents were off somewhere else in the house. "Uncle Pete! Is the Easter Bunny just Mom and Dad and Santa Clause and the Tooth Fairy too?" I swear!!! I'm all, "uuuuuuuuuhhhhh, what does your Mom say? Whatever they say is true, I don't know!" "Oohh, so 'cause you don't have kids (thanks for the dig buddy) you don't know anything about Santa and the Easter Bunny." "Sure, yeah just don't ask me stuff like that."
There's definitely a buttload of characters to keep up with. But I noticed something awesome in the title sequence of that episode. I usually go pee or get some tea or something during that but we should all pay close attention to it. They go around the map and point out where all of the action of the episode will take place and how they relate geographically. They started out in King's Landing of course then went out to Dragonstone where Stannis and his [best right hand (minus 3 fingers) man in all worlds] then over to Pyke where Theon ArseFace would try it on with his sister then down to Winterfell showing how Pyke is part of that realm, sort of. Then they go up to the Wall and all that then take off way way way way way far away. So far that the globe turns sideways to show how far Daenarys and the Dothrakis are from the action. It's subtle for sure but I will be keeping a close eye on it from now on.
Also, I hate that fucking guy! No wonder Paul tried to ditch him.
All I can keep thinking of is God Damn It Paul by 5/8. . . for all those early 90's Athens, GA Emo enthusiasts out there. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6w9F9t0QAng
Well, it's likely that Weiner is a German derivation Jewish name. In German it'd be pronounced "Viner" so anglicizing it to "Whiner" makes sense. ei in German is a long i. Plus people can say their names anyway they want. "Welcom to the program Mr. Raymond Luxury Yacht" "No, no, no! It's spelled Raymond Luxury Yacht but it's pronounced Throat Wobbler Mangrove!!!"
I so want to talk about spoilers!!!
Also, perfect casting on Davros! Such a great character and that dude totally fits. Although he's a bit tougher looking than I pictured the guy in the book.
When did Sarah Silverman get on this show?
KajusX & Chainsaws, you make an excellent point and I'm somewhat guilty of it myself. I wonder if maybe there's a possible forum for people that have read the books that can be full on spoilers? Most of my friends love the show but haven't read the books and I'm DYING DYING DYING to talk about and speculate how stuff will play out on the show.
So right about that, "You want this? . . . Fuck you! You get the opposite" in general when it comes to Starks. [Minor minor spoilery] Martin does give some good beat downs on people that deserve it. Cersei's cannot be predicted I believe even though when it happened I was like, "Of course!"
