I just like how in 2015 Paul McCartney and Steely Dan are cooler than they have been in years
This comment really shows how racially tinged the word "thug" can be. What exactly did Kanye or Rihanna do to deserve to be called thugs? Think about some white starlets like Lindsay Lohan or even Miley Cyrus, both of them act way more out of hand than Rihanna. When was the last time anyone referred to one of them as a thug? Not saying we need to retire the word, but maybe consider what it means before using it and think about whether or not a person deserves is aside from being black.
I was cracking up about the mixtape of the week, Angel Baby is my nickname for my cat.
I don't know if I ever went through a jam band phase... I remember an old roommate putting on a string cheese DVD once and thinking it was brutal. Never liked Umphrey's, Widespread, or Keller Williams(freaker by the speaker was a good song though). I was kind of into Moe. but even them, I saw them live once and was bored to tears. My point is I was a huge Phish fan, they are so much better than all those other bands. I've gotta listen the Billy Breaths again soon, I remember Rift and Story of the Ghost also being favorites. Pretty sure Lawn Boy and A Picture of Nectar were great as well and I listened to their new album for a week straight when it came out. I even saw them live 5-6 years ago after I had kind of started to grow out of them. I remember worrying that I wouldn't be into them anymore, at this point I had been reading pitchfork for a few years and had gotten into "cooler" or more critically acclaimed music, and guess what?? They fucking killed it! Yeah, their lyrics make no sense, but think about all the songs you like and what % of them do you know what they are about? Idk, I like Phish, leave Trey alone.
I actually love the way his voice sounds on this track, I like the autotune. No he doesn't have a traditionally good singing voice, and maybe its not even good in a non traditional way but he certainly makes it work here. I think the way the vocals sound are perfect for this track and for me the fact that he had to use autotune doesn't take anything away for me. An aside tho, what it McCartney taught him how to sing a little? If he worked on it he could get better. Working with PM could sent his career in a totally different trajectory.
The best part is when you lose yourself in the song and forget that McCartney is playing the keyboard then you remember that McCartney is playing the keyboard.
re #34, when you said "I’ll grab a breakfast burrito and a bloody mary" are you saying you have somewhere to get a to-go bloody mary? If that's the case it sounds awesome but it's probably for the best that I don't have access to that.
I actually never listened to "Seasons" until Pitchfork listed it as the #1 song of the year. Until then all I knew about Future Islands was one time I came across a FI concert pic on some random site where the lead singer was rocking what appeared to be a massive boner, which I then posted to the comments here. Anyways, my personal songs of the year list looks almost as silly w/o "Seasons" as the 'gum albums list looks w/o Black Messiah. I probably won't be posting much until all the year end lists come out next year, or at least until the Summer, so for now I'll wish you all... http://www.ecorazzi.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/07/ringo-starr-01-copy.jpg
How dare you steal my thunder a.j. You said you wished the D'Angelo album would come out, you predicted nothing! And shame on you Raptor Judas, I expected better
I think the point was these were "premature" because it was a review before the album came out. In this instance the album came out last night so it isn't premature in that sense. Maybe would have been better off waiting a day and making this aotw?
Just sayin... http://www.stereogum.com/1721100/the-50-best-albums-of-2014/list/#comment-8440366
This is probably the most similar list to mine and it only has 2 songs in common. Interesting that as far as I have noticed the only mentions of "Tuesday" have been you, me, and Chris Deville and we all had it as #1
Just read through all the lists posted and they are absurdly diverse
Not saying I don't like it, doubt I will get sick of Drake anytime soon, but listen to "0 to 100" and when the hook starts rap the hook from "Started from the Bottom" over it. It fits perfectly. It's like each word from each hook has the exact same # of syllables.
Every comment I leave is a reply for some reason
"We didn’t collaborate on this list, except to make sure that our individual lists didn’t overlap — once a song was chosen by one writer, it was off-limits for everyone else" So was it like a fantasy football draft? How did you determine who got the first pick? Was it a snake format? I'd like to think this all went down at Buffalo Wild wings.
Somewhat off topic, but speaking of prominent tracks from this year I can't be the only person who noticed that "0 to 100" was basically the exact same song as "Started From the Bottom". Drake tried to pull a fast one on us y'all.
Somewhat thought out, somewhat off the cuff... 1. iLoveMakonnen - Tuesday (with or without Drake) 2. Real Estate - Talking Backwards 3. Spoon - Inside Out 4. Steve Gunn - Wayout Weather 5. Perfume Genius - Queen Other favs... Jeremih - Don't Tell Em, SBTRKT - Temporary View, Sia - Chandelier, Sun Kil Moon - Ben's My Best Friend, Taylor Swift - Shake it Off, New Pornographers - Brill Bruisers, Mac Demarco - Goodbye Weekend FREEMAN - Covert Discretion, Mr. Twin Sister - In The House of Yes, Run The Jewels - Close Your Eyes (And Count to Fuck)
I guess I could have figured this out myself... Last comment was on July 11, didn't exactly go out in flames. He was always a great heel with an interesting, even if somewhat trollish view on things. I remember going back and forth with him on NYE last year. The fact that he went out with a wimper along with the time elapsed makes me think he really might be done for good. I'd like to think he is looking down on us from Stereogum Heaven with DJFreshie.
I've commented more in the past week than I have in the past year or so, I've obviously noticed his absence. How long has he been missing?
Well good work, thank god for clever people with too much time on their hands.
I'm assuming you didn't b/c you just scanned the comments for actual lists. It would have pushed them up a spot to #6, I feel like I've let everyone down.
Dude, you are a nerd. I love it.
This is so great that I'm bummed I didn't post my top ten. Just out of curiosity did you give Spoon a first place vote for when I mentioned that They Want My Soul was my favorite album of the year?
The way I do it is I right click on it, then select "open image in a new tab". Then go to the new tab and copy and paste the web address from that.
Ha, this made me think of Silverchair too. They were def my fav band for a few months in 6th grade.
Although there's no sex in my violence
Don't try to fight me after I've listened to Machine Head, I'll probably be able to kick your ass
Should've been # 1989...
lol @ "I was SO not surprised..." should have read "not so surprised..."
Oh, album by Mr. Twin Sister was so good. I would've included "Salad Days" but I kinda knew Stereogum wasn't as into it as I was so not surprised its not in there.
To me this wasn't the best year for new music... "They Want My Soul" was my fav album to come out. "Way Out Weather" by Steve Gunn would be my biggest omission from this list, that would prob be in my personal top 5. I think I'm the only person on the planet that preferred the first RTJ album over RTJ 2, not that it still wasn't one of the better albums of the year. Album from Chumped is the album from this list that I've never heard of that I want to check out.
Something(Frank Ocean? Kanye? Kendrick?) is gonna drop out of nowhere in a few weeks and this list is gonna look dumb. I'm calling it.
That was abrubt
To be fair, I don't think you could prove that the CIA ISN'T behind Alcoholics Anonymous.
Just a few days ago I had a revelation that Starbucks sucks. Their coffee is not good and most of their food is terrible. I think the only thing I like is the cheese danish and I am way into cheese danishes. I've been noticing a lot of ads for Peet's in Chicago recently. Peet's is the shit, as of right now I only know of one Peet's in Chicago. I hope they take over. From what I understand they are a pretty big deal in San Fran, I mean they are a big enough corporation so maybe they can pull it off. Give me one reason why every Starbucks shouldn't be replaced by Peet's.
She's my wife man, she don't do that no more. :(
