I really disagree. That drum sound is really really hard to get. The mic placement at Studio G and Joel’s engineering is awesome. Having them poke through the thickness of those tracks like that is extremely difficult to engineer and takes a lot of intelligent use of side-chaining compressors and expanders. Joel is a drummer as well as an engineer and I think he does a damn fantastic job with getting a massive drum sound. Synthetic drums don’t PUMP like that. That’s just a good compression / expansion chain from good ears IMO.
