Ten years ago I started Djing because of Underworld. No one was playing these amazing tracks where I lived at the time, so I bought decks and began playing records. This hobby has developed into a full blown passion to which I devote more time to than anything else. For years I always included an Underworld track in every set. I was disappointed when Darren left the band. Not because I thought they would begun to suck, but because I liked them just fine the way they were. The next album, 100 days off was pretty damn good. It wasn’t as good as the any of their earlier albums that included Darren, but it was still Underworld. Seeing them live was still amazing. I am not sure what exact influence Darren had on the micro level of each production, but his influence on the macro level of the band can not be questioned any longer. He hasn’t exactly set the world on fire with his own productions, either, so it appears that this is a case where the sum is much greater than the parts. Frankly, the fact that Rick and Karl went outside the band to a bunch of different producers suggests they don’t have it any longer, but the proof is in the pudding. This track would be great if my buddies made it in their bedroom and they were 17 and about to graduate high school, but we are talking about Underworld, and for them this track must be considered an epic failure. I saw them a couple years ago at the Hollywood bowl, and it was a bit of a letdown compared to other shows of theirs I have seen. Unless they selected a song that does not represent the direction of the new album as the lead single, then I suspect that this time around I will not make it out to see them. This was unthinkable in the past. I admire Rick and Karl greatly, and I could not thank them enough (along with Darren) for making music that has inspired me so greatly, but rather than defile their legacy with sub par releases, I wish they would just go score movies or do art work. This feels way too much like they are taking advantage of their fans. I salute Darren for leaving the band while they were still on top. This song is rubbish.
