i was surprised to see this article here. and i fucking love that it is. but where the mother fuck are all the female writers at Stereogum? and what the hell?
Rape Me and Dumb are among my all time favorite Nirvana tracks. Cobain's writing is so honest and this band just, rocks so fucking hard. i love Bleach a lot. whenever i'm feeling anxious or angry i just turn on School, Blew or Love Buzz. i wont lie, i spend most of my time with Live At Reading. i can never get over how young Grohl was at the time and Novoselic's loose bass strings are my boyfriend. so yeah, i'd say i'm a Nirvana fan. i love the early stuff, i love it all. (also, if you haven't indulged in Azerrad's Come As You Are: The Story Of Nirvana, you'll fall even harder.)
Earl is, just, really great. the subtle and obvious hints of Odd Future up and down the track listing are the best delivery OF efforts yet. this record was worth the wait.
i don't remember why i checked out WU LYF in the first place (likely it was that album art) but im sure glad i did. i had the pleasure of seeing them twice, both times at Washington DC's Rock And Roll Hotel. the crowds were completely different both times. and the second time i went, i went with my roommate who had converted to a full on fangirl. we went over to the merch table and i ended up buying a poster that they had made up - of the album art and some lyrics from the title track. (he said they made only like 150, or something like that?) it was before the show and Ellery Roberts was standing behind the merch table eating chicken wings. (his speaking voice kind of sounds like his singing voice, which is totally weird.) the chicken grease and sauce was all over his hands. i was awkward about it and asked him to sign my poster. so after he dried his hands, he left a signature that is mostly indecipherable except for the word "Ellery" and, i think, a heart. its in a frame on my wall. it's one of my most prized possessions, next to Go Tell Fire To The Mountain - because its an incredible fucking record. im so happy i can live the whole rest of my life with it.
the presence of Strange Fruit - in its samples and the nod to it - on Blood On The Leaves feels overtly important to me. its a historically important and significant song and yet i wonder if its [the song and its importance is] common knowledge. we can ask, "would it matter if you don't know Strange Fruit?" because how easy is it to recognize every single sample? but this whole record is intentional: the off beats, the features, the drops, the trill. and with something like Strange Fruit being prominent ...its there for a reason. and people listen to Kanye. he is a popular artist, bringing it to the front. i think it can speak louder than New Slaves or Black Skinhead, even if they're better songs and "friendlier" (and shorter). but then, do you know Strange Fruit?
where's "Hot Knife"? some of the greatest Fiona lyrics, or any love lyrics, are on that track and you aren't gonna put it on this list? i want to immediately disqualify, but there are other gems. like Paper Bag ...just a reminder:
