D'aw... these two... they never fail to fill my heart with utter joy and love. <3 I honestly didn't know what to expect from this as I had never heard of Rookie or this column until now; was initially expecting maybe a joke-type skit or something. So happy to see the guys stepping up and being honest, sincere, and just awesome role-models in general. This totally just made my day! Come to think of it, I've honestly lost count at how many times RTJ have made my day, period.
Holy wow guys... welcome to the first full-stacked, amazingly awesome, new release Tuesday! I can't think of any more that hasn't already been said (nice review btw, RJ!) so I'll just simply add to the praise: Viet Cong are great. The End. Other releases that have kept me busy all-day and/or I'll be blasting in my car on my ride home from work: S-K Cloakroom Joey Bada$$ Until The Ribbon Breaks Petite Noir Thanks to HartfordTheWhale, I have discovered Ghost Culture and I am forever grateful! Really digging their album thus far. Aaaand, last but certainly not least... The Sidekicks' new album is fantastic and everything I hoped it would be since they popped up on my radar quite recently. Whew... why, hello there 2015! You and I are going to get along just fine ;)
Great interview! It also reminded me to check out the rest of the True Trans series as I had only seen the first 4 episodes when they initially popped online. Definitely hope that Laura continues to work on that book she mentioned as well, I'd purchase that in a heartbeat!
Speaking of MM and dicks... remember all those rumors way back when that he removed his ribs so he could, ya know, pleasure himself? Too bad that happened then and not now... Mark Kozelek could have had another hit on his hands: "Marilyn Manson, Suck Your Cock"

Bush must of had a thing for palm-muting... while I don't think - or remember anyway - trying to master "Glycerine" on guitar, I did my fair share of practicing "Machine Head" and I'm pretty sure that song alone made me learn the art of the palm-mute.
I'll always have a soft spot for "Greedy Fly." The video always stuck with me too, mainly because it was the first and last time I saw it, as MTV banned it immediately afterwards. I looked it up on youtube a couple years ago to see if it was as graphic and dark as I remembered back then, and while I still don't quite understand what's going on - nor did it scare the crap out of me like it did in my youth - I think it holds up remarkably well.
I thought the same thing when I saw that category... not my particular #1 favorites, but hey, for the Grammys? Could be a lot worse. At least they're all "rock" in some sense and they avoided the "Lorde is totally rock, man!" thing that was happening last year.
I prefer the Pure X remix feat. Xiu Xiu personally.
RTJ made me late for work this morning... I flipped shit when I saw the download waiting for me in my inbox and had to load it on my iPod immediately. Luckily, I've been at my work long enough for my boss to count "downloading an album" as a legitimate excuse. It's gonna be an awesome weekend, guys.
I loved Devotion, so I'm hoping I'm not let down by this... looking forward to streaming it on my way home from work tonight. Otherwise, it's been Roomrunner, Lanegan, Young Statues, and Nude Beach for me throughout the day. I'm also still kinda bummed that today was supposed to be the release date of Charli XCX's Sucker until it got pushed back until Dec. Alas, I guess I should be happy it's at least landing before the year is up.
I didn't think my excitement for this album could grow any more... ...I was wrong.
Well said. I can't help but agree with Johnson as well. As a girl - and a girl who's gone to tons and tons of punk shows - stage diving is nothing new to me. Hell, I've even done it myself in my younger and more dumb days. What this all boils down to is concert etiquette. People can stage dive/mosh/whatever... but look out for each other while doing so. I've gotten knocked around plenty of times in the pit but what grinds my gears more than anything is when I'm slammed in to by some 200+ pound dude and he just looks at me, doesn't apologize, and continues on. I won't go anywhere near the stage now at shows - older and wiser - but I constantly see girls get ransacked by guys who could care less. Some of the FB comments on Joyce Manor's page really are gross. I will say though... sometimes girls are just as guilty at the "not caring" at shows thing. I've gotten banged into and whipped by purses with no apology or even a glance back to by girls who think they're above it all as well. As I said, it's all just about having some damn concert etiquette and respecting your fellow concert peers. I really wish there was a "how to behave at shows" manual that kids are forced to read sometimes.
Cymbals Eat Guitars have dominated my stereo for the past week... which is certainly saying something considering the sheer amount of brilliant releases we were graced with a week ago. I just can't get enough of it, the track "Lifenet" alone has jumped into my top 3 songs of the year thus far. So.freakin'.good. This week I'm gonna try and focus more on Merchandise. Cassavetes' Oh So Long is also great... it may have been buried by all the other releases last week and that's a shame because it's really something special.
I'm still trying to wrap my head (or ears, rather) around this release week. SO many good ones today: Merchandise, Cymbals Eat Guitars, Rustie, The Bug, Ty Segall... cannot wait to fire up Spotify on my way home from work and blast the hell out of as many as I can.
Oh happy day! I already am looking forward to the Fall... this just makes it even more unbearable.
Completely agreed on the summer-time release. I'm just itching to get the hell out of work so I can roll down my windows, fire up the album via Spotify, and have an exhilarating ride home.
Damn... I'm taking my sister to see Gaga on the Chicago date and was hoping I'd get to witness Baby Metal first-hand. Alas, they aren't on our date... instead we get the group Crayon Pop, who I'm sure you're familiar with Tom considering your knowledge on the K-Pop scene. I'm sure it'll be interesting nonetheless.
Can he be any more ignorant? There are plenty of "aggressive" bands out there, but apparently, he is just really bad at finding them and new music in general. It's the same as people living in the past and claiming that all new music is "crap." With all the outlets to find new music nowadays, I just find it baffling that people can still have this argument.
I was initially nervous on whether I would like this or not - especially after seeing the first comment on Soundcloud that proclaimed, "THAT DROP" (ugh) - but I'm super duper digging this track! Really hope she plans on releasing a new album this year.
Aw man :( this does indeed suck. I'm seeing Basement in August but unfortunately, Ovlov aren't on the Chicago dates of the tour, which I was initially bummed about... but now I'm even MORE bummed.
Agreed. I've had it on repeat since I stepped into work this morning. It's fantastic. Another one I'm excited to check out on my way home - that wasn't mentioned in the list above - is Kitten's self-titled debut. I caught them on Charli XCX's tour last fall and have been keeping my eye on them ever since.
Sweet! It definitely is fan-submitted footage, btw. They asked their fans on Facebook to submit videos of themselves opening up the Record Store Day 10" and listening to it for the first time.
Wow, fantastic piece Tom! Rancid will always hold a very special place in my heart. I started with "AOCTW" then promptly picked up "Let's Go" afterwards, both records changed my life for the better. I got the pleasure of seeing them for the 4th time at last year's Riot Fest and I can proudly say they still kill it. I was in absolute glory for their hour long set.
The Orwells have been on my radar for a while now due to them being from my hometown... and I couldn't be any more pleased with their new album. I can definitely see the Strokes comparisons, but they definitely also have a bit more of a 90's flavor to their sound. Is it my favorite release this week? Probably not - Fucked Up and Parquet Courts take that title - but I did some driving around yesterday to it and it went perfectly with the sunny weather, windows rolled down, and some tapping to the steering wheel.
It's definitely a toss-up on who I despise more. If we're talking about just Sublime WITH Rome and not Sublime with Bradley, I'll vote for them as the "more hated band" any day of the week over LP. Having met Rome at a hotel party a couple years ago, I can attest that the guy is beyond a douche bag bro. He threw an entire bottle of champagne into the hotel room wall, laughed while looking around at all of us for approval of his "rock star debauchery" display, and then sat on one of the beds telling everyone to "hush" while he played songs off his upcoming "solo" album from his iPod. True story. I finished my drink and promptly left, since I was only there for the free booze in the first place.
Yes! Been listening to it ALL DAY. And on a day that SO many good, new releases have come out... that certainly says something. Excited to listen to No Peace once I get around to it though... as well as Hercules & Love Affair and Haunted Hearts.
Sad is you using a meaningless hash-tag in a Stereogum comment section.
Me thinks drgonzo secured the top spot in Shut Up Dude! this week ;)
I'm shocked they didn't mention that vocab data thing in this article... I actually thought Stereogum was doing a "Best Of" strictly because of Aesop grabbing the top spot. Completely agree with the #1 pick, None Shall Pass is my personal favorite. And the video to "Coffee" remains as one of my favorite music videos, ever. Must admit, I loved the Hail Mary Mallon album though - despite the lyrical content not being the best - and I'm happy to see that they're in the midst of making a follow-up.
Yep... I'm a sucker, I ordered it. Gimmicky or not, if you're someone who loves vinyl, you just can't pass up all these features - especially at only $20. The curiosity behind the whole "dual-groove" technology thing alone got me, hook, line, and sinker.
Count me in as hearing of Ash due to Free All Angels. Not Ash related but still on-topic: Does anyone remember or has even heard of the band Manbreak? I freakin' loved their album Come And See back in 1997. I think they may have released one more album and then after that, it was RIP for them as a band. I'll still revisit Come And See from time to time... and it still remains one of my favorites of the 90s Brit-Pop universe.
If that was their setlist, I would be able to die happy immediately after leaving that show... MAJOR props for including "The Morning Sad." I always feel like that VS track is somewhat overlooked. It's definitely one of their more poppy songs, kind of in the direction Nina went in when she did her solo album, but it definitely deserves some more recognition. Dudley - Totally agree about "One Last Time." Although I think there's a good chance for them to whip it out on their tour. When I saw Veruca Salt, sans Nina, back in about '04 or '05, they played it. Now that Nina's back, I don't see any reason for them not to.
Oh.My.God. I literally stopped everything I was doing at work to read this. Great interview Cole! Seriously, this made my freaking day. Jealous is an understatement that they asked you to create a set-list for them. If you could throw "Number One Blind" and "Don't Make Me Prove It" in there, that'd be great. ;) VS were HUGE for me growing up. Eight Arms To Hold You in particular. I was girl growing up in the suburbs of Chicago and Nina and Louise inspired me to pick up a guitar and start a band of my own. Obviously, that didn't last haha, but I still know how to play guitar and they're to thank. I woke up hella early on Saturday to get to my local record shop with the hopes of scoring their 10". It was first on my list. I didn't get lucky... so I broke down and checked eBay for it the next day. I found it for about $35, placed a bid for $40 and bam, got it. It should be arriving any day and I can hardly contain my excitement. "The Museum Of Broken Relationships" sounds fantastic, it's as if they never missed a beat or took a break. Anyways, I have rambled enough... once again, awesome interview Cole! Can't wait to see them live again - first time since '97 - back in their hometown of Chicago once more.
YES! I used to love OLP. Clumsy, front to back, is still one of my favorite 90s albums. I even enjoyed one of their later releases, Gravity, quite a bit.
I'm a little late to this party but felt the need to comment.. Man oh man... I'm really not a Lorde fan either but geez, caaaalm down. I get what you're saying, but I also understand the principle on why they did what they did - it makes sense when you really think about it - and honestly, it is worth getting yourself this riled up over it? They still had Kim Gordon and Joan Jett perform as well, so you can at least be satisfied with that. And I'm old enough to have "been around when Nirvana came out" so don't make that assumption. I'm just saying to step off the soap box - it happened, there's nothing you can change about it, move on.
Ugh, couldn't agree with you more. I really wanted to watch that first video of Stipe inducting them, but it was literally giving me motion sickness as I'm trying to sit here and eat lunch while watching it. Is it really that hard to hold the damn phone steady? And if I heard the person filming say "yep, yep" one more time in the background, I was gonna lose it, so I just stopped watching it all together. HBO will be airing the whole ceremony on May 31st though so I'll definitely be tuning into that!
It's been an awesome new music Tuesday! Have yet to check out EMA's release, but I'll get to it tomorrow. I received Pup's self-titled 12" in the mail yesterday and have been listening to it non-stop ever since. I know it was released in Canada last year, but I didn't get around to purchasing it until they had the pre-order for the US version. Can't recommend it enough; up-beat, gritty, fast, punch-in-your face punk. It's up there in my top 5 releases of the year thus far. I'm also diggin' Todd Terje's It's Album Time, the new OFF!, and I don't see them mentioned on Tom's list but also Donovan Wolfington's Scary Stories You Tell In The Dark. Start with the song "Keef Ripper," absolutely fantastic.
Best selling indie release of all time? Well, I just learned something new today... totally would have never guessed that. I have a soft spot for the Offspring. Sure, people mock their corny pop-punk tunes and Dexter when he had his white-boy dreads, but this album single-handedly got me into the different breeds of punk. Smash led me to Pennywise's Full Circle, which then led me to the masterpiece that is Rancid's Out Come The Wolves, and the rest is history for then on. Everyone in my 7th grade class at the time worshiped Dookie, but I was partial Smash... in turn, causing many of debates between the grade-school-era me and my classmates. To this day, I still prefer the Offspring to Green Day. However, my favorite release from them will always be Ixnay On The Hombre, followed closely by Ignition. Songs like "All I Want" and "Session" will pop up on my iPod from time to time and - if I'm driving - I can't help but push my foot down on the gas peddle a little more, windows rolled down on a hot summer day, pat my steering wheel to the beat, and belt out the words with a smile.
