As interesting as these bands may be, the masses clearly make their decision. Most people don't care about thinking beyond the hook. The trick is to get people intstantaneously bobbing their heads and singing along to lyrics that also have a deeper meaning. That way you grab everyone, whether they care to dive into the complexity of the music or not. It's sad to say, but these other more interesting bands haven't accomplished that. Although, every now and then some bands do accomplish this balance of artistic integrity and commercial success, like radiohead or interpol. Still it should come to no suprise to anyone that the hooky bands have their moment of sunshine and commercial success. The way I see it, commercial success and artistic integrity are two seperate things, which can work together, but most of the time they don't.
