Solo is the stand out for me. When the chorus comes in I literally said out loud "Jesus fucking christ" and almost started crying. I think it's one of his best songs ever, probably soty for me.

I'm not sure about the technicalities of NYC neighborhood's but I'd say Other Music is NOHO/NYU/East Village before I'd say West Village. It is on East 4th street. I do work down the street. And this is a mega bummer.

yep, they're a bit more workmanlike than those other bands, and they are way less interested in noise or unconventional songwriting. but songs like the only moment we were alone are very worthy.

yep, bowery controls most of the major booking and venues in the city. the shows i've seen at T5 have really run the gamut from the hurrican katrina benefit with the super stacked bill of cults, the antlers, grizzly bear and sleigh bells (which was struggle city) to courtney barnett a few months back. the crowd for courntey was unbelievably polite and she fucking owned that shit like you wouldn't believe. like serious kurt cobain vibes from that woman.

No, Tom's not saying the question to be answered by this Premature Evaluation is if this is a multigenerational classic or not?...he's saying that's the only question remaining, since this review is deciding that it is already great.

dan I like how riled up your are about this but I believe you are sort of misinterpreting Tillman here. What he's trying to say is that there is a divide between the universe of popular indie music and radio pop. He even says it's blurring, BUT, that it is important for some artists to remain on the indie side because a) the artists that occupy the radio pop sphere are not usually occupied with making certain kinds of artistic statements and b) those that attempt to 'pass through' end up making concessions such that those kind of artistic statements and designs become compromised in the process of 'passing through'. That sounds pretty accurate and real to me. You may disagree about the qualities of his music but I think he's a got a pretty good pulse on the zeitgeist. This description does seem diametrically opposed to 'poptimism' or attempting to piece out and diminish the hierarchy of valuation in music criticism. But I think that it's actually not hard to imagine someone holding both viewpoints (as I guess I do); that you can appreciate pop music and even seriously listen to it while finding your own personal tastes and artistic endeavors quite different; maybe not relevant or maybe tangentially connected to that world; but that there is a fairly clear difference. I have a feeling most gummer's probably feel this way. Not sure if it was you or another commenter who said this, but I don't Tillman hates Swift or Adams at all. I think he's a music fan first and foremost, he may be uninterested or grossed about my some of Taylor Swift's musical aesthetic (as I think many Stereogum readers are) but like most of us I doubt he'd deny her talent as a songwriter and musician. He is also certainly a Ryan Adams fan; he has included Ryan Adams songs on his Spotify playlist, which by the way is really excellent and full of classics and obscure stuff, many of which are clear influences on the Misty sound or songwriting process.

Ian Cohen is actually a very good writer and music journalist, he doesn't deserve all the hate. P4K definitely uses him as the axe man sometimes. Or maybe he likes to do it, I dunno. That being said he does come across as incredibly douchey in that video.

such a bummer about the dissolve. would be pretty sad if that was a factor here. i don't even know where to read about movies anymore. any suggestions?

can't say that I'm not disappointed. Conde Nast blows, everyone involved in fashion knows those publications are absolute garbage and it's an annoyance that they are the center of gravity of that industry...hopefully P4K can maintain their vision.

dude I used to love tanlines. now i hear them on too many terrible urban outfitters esque pandora radio stations. I also somehow feel like the songs are actually just less good then when I did when it came out without even taking into account the oversaturation/bad assocation factor.
