Not trying to throw shade, but seriously?
Beautiful summation of the legal nightmare that running a label can be. With that said, I’ve heard James is impossible, and I was under the impression that DFA, sadly, were no longer an active concern. Galkin having a new Black Dice release on his own label seemed suspicious, but now it makes sense, especially since DFA haven’t released anything new by any Black Dice-affiliated acts in several years after pushing Eric’s releases strongly for several cycles. Also seemed funny the new Museum of Love album didn’t drop on DFA, but now that seems clearer. DFA has also been selling off their remaining stock pretty cheap, test pressings and white labels included, so… It’s kind of heartbreaking, but I guess it happens to most indie labels at one point or another. Hope things work out for Galkin, as I’ve always gotten the impression he is a nice guy. Same for James, even if he’s kind of a dick these days.
The Tucc is loose, baby! Tucci really does look like a good match for Clive in the movie.
Showing more proof that the police don't know anything about anything, getting shot at with an automatic weapon just after leaving a studio is not an example of road rage, it's frickin' attempted homicide and probably some kind of gang attack or terrorist action. That said, dude must have pissed someone off quite bad.
This is using an outdated method of tabulation and calling yourself the most successful because you know how to abuse that system. If your song is #1, or numbers 2-9, and no one hears them through natural means, what does it matter? Billboard needs to modernize it’s charts and stop bs like this. You had to buy those five Beatles records for them to get to the top of the charts, whereas all Drake has to do is have people stream them, which they can do for free depending on their service of choice. This is such crap, which is also how I feel about Drake in general.
I get what you're saying about making excuses, and I'm really not trying to do that, just stating a fact. That said, if you've got a substance abuse issue and you do something terrible because of it, it's still your fault and you can't pin it on the drugs, drinks or meds. Clean up your own mess and take responsibility. AND LEAVE THE KIDS OUT OF IT! Sorry if that sounds a bit overly clean-cut, though those are the basic tenants of dealing with addiction, so I don't know what else I would say. And with that, I think we are now on the same page.
As a long time fan of Josh and the Queens, I will never claim he’s perfect, but I won’t dismiss him as a complete piece of shit either. It’s not very well documented but a lot of his bad activity in the last few years has a lot to do with pain killers after he injured his back, which is related to why he kicked that photographer. As for Dalle, I’m not calling her a liar, but I don’t know all of the details either. This is a legal he said she said where it’s easier to damage one of the contributors because of his better known public history and bad acts. We don’t know if the children’s complaints are honest or not, and it’s never good for the kids to have to be involved either. So I’m just going to say that we should reserve final judgements until we know the real story or at least enough to back things up. I’m not saying he’s innocent, I’m sure he fucked up good, but I’m not going to write him off like Marilyn Manson, R. Kelly, Chris Brown or whomever, at least not yet. Give me shit for that if you will, but relationships are hard, and so is addiction, and it’s gotta be even harder when relationships fail and there are kids involved. I just want the best for everyone.
Now that would be a wonderful counterpoint article.
Jeff, I can’t help but think you’ve thought far too deeply about The Moldy Peaches, but I’ve overthought Metal Machine Music, so to each their own. That said, I’ve always read this album as being about the wonder of letting your inner child stay alive. Are there vaguely political statements littered throughout the record? Yes, but it’s far too easy to brush them away as part of a jumbled stream of nonsense. That could be by design, but I also think it’s the joy of letting your freak flag fly. Say something important, say something pointless, say it all, just say it. If anything, they remind me of how much joy I found in Beck’s Mellow Gold and his earlier demos and records, where it seemed he was more entertained by the idea of having an idea than writing a real song. Beck is a good songwriter though, and so are the Peaches. We should all be so bold as to start antifolk bands and write fun, funny, and catchy songs, sometimes all at once, about whatever we’re thinking about and smile along with the similarly inspired. Love it, be it political or otherwise. Also, that OTHER SITE still sucks. ❤️
A new Bicarb Soda verse would be hot! Hope OG Schnoz makes an appearance. Maybe then I’ll give a fuck about Drake. Nah, who am I kidding.
Kinda surprised they’re already sending out review copies of this, unless it leaked. Did it leak? Regardless, sounds like a must listen.
Yes, this song sucks and it’s dumb. Yes, I kinda love it. This is definitely low-period Billy Joel, but whatever, I’ll take what I can get. But that score is accurate, it’s a 1, tried and true. Won’t make it go away, won’t make it any less memorable, but yeah, it’s bad. At least it’s not When I See You Smile.
Actually Chris, your description of the video sounds like you understand it just fine. Hey, I liked it, and I guess I'm considered an old so this transcends generations I guess. Regardless, more please!
I was in a Walgreens with my wife while she was getting her first shot of the vaccine when this cloying crap came on. I told her they had some of the worst in-store muzak ever, with a shitty Beatles (not the Shitty Beatles of Wayne’s World fame) rip-off by Sheryl Crow coming on after. I guess if that’s what I need to go through for us to stay healthy, fine, but I sure wish I’d brought earplugs. Also, a 3 is generous. 1 is more like it.
I'd happily buy a physical issue of this if he put one out, even if it were on cassette. How about it, James?
Every time I see more anti-climactic news about Kanye and his new “album”, in my mind I always hear Jay-Z, near the end of the College Dropout, saying “fuck you Kanye”. Nothing else, and it perfectly describes how I feel about Kanye these days.
Walter truly was a mad man, and if it weren’t for him, much of the music we love from the 80s might not be. He was weird and wooly, and he could never exist in the industry as it is today. I hope he went peacefully. He needs to be remembered both as a success story and a warning of the excesses that success can bring. Still amazed he lived as long as he did, and shocked that Clive Davis is still hanging onto this mortal coil. Farewell, Walter. Paul Simon won’t celebrate you, but I will.
But did you have some good stuff on that iPod? Could still be a huge personal win for yourself. Doesn't have to be a Jimi Hendrix recorded boot of Joni for it to still be awesome, though that story is pretty incredible.
This is a real shame. Peter brought a lot of great avant-garde music to the public consciousness via the Mego and Editions Mego labels. Fennesz’ Endless Summer was just discussed here not long ago. He also did cool, albeit pretty odd, releases like the Fridge Music records with General Magic, where they made music based around the sounds of a broken refrigerator. His contributions mean a lot more than is probably acknowledged, and 53 is a rather young age to pass away. He will definitely be missed.
Lovely How I Let My Mind Float is legitimately awesome. Stone Age, on Buhloone Mindstate, is great too, but Mind Float is on another level. Maybe they'll get it right with the new label that bought Tommy Boy. Supposedly they're working on vinyl reissues for release later this year, but the way vinyl gets backed up these days I don't know if I believe it could be that soon.
I’d ask who approved this, but it sounds like his mother was likely involved. As I’m sure she’s getting paid off this, I’ll let it pass because hey, that’s her thing. I’m sure she makes money off her son’s legacy but I also realize she’s gotten older and these are diminishing returns, so I can’t hate her for making a buck. But to whomever at Budweiser thought this was a good idea, go drink some of your shitty beer and try to defend this as somehow artistic. I hope they paid Biggie’s estate a lot of money to do this, because it’s otherwise a waste.
Why don’t you just not play any shows you overrated fuckwit. Good enough to sing Van Morrison’s words when he couldn’t be bothered but not good enough to care about people’s health? Fine, nobody wants to see or hear you anyway.
Losing Biz is like losing a bit of my inner child. He was always the funniest, loosest guy and I loved him dearly. He just seemed like the kind of dude you'd want to hang out with. When someone dies, everyone talks about how special the person they lost is, and in no way am I saying they aren't special, but Biz seemed to convey a level of joy that you could feel in anything he showed up in. Whether he was just appearing out of nowhere in the video for Rob Base and DJ E-Z Rock's It Takes Two or singing the hook from the Bee Gees' Night Fever over the phone on the first Handsome Boy Modeling School album or doing dozens/snaps jokes for the Snaps commercials/cd/book, OR ANYTHING, he just knew how to brighten the day. I'm sure he was kidding when he claimed to have a copy of Bob James' Mardi Gras without the bells, but I don't really know, maybe he wasn't, and it's just another one of those things that we're never going to know now. The world really is a little colder and greyer without him. I love you Biz, Rest In Peace and Power!
AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH! TELL ME MORE! JUST PUT IT OUT! TAKE MY MONEY!!!!!!!
I don't think he fucked up music for anyone. Sure, autotune has become a thing, but T-Pain was using it, as he'd freely admit, totally wrong from how anyone was supposed to use it, and that's cool! That's how people innovate, by finding new ways to use things we already have! It's not like people didn't want to listen to people's real voices anymore. Hell, if anything, I'd prefer to listen to people's real voices without autotune being used to correct any pitchy issues. But what T-Pain did is great, even if I don't listen to his music often. Usher really needs to... usher himself out of here... is that a good line? Probably not. Usher needs to keep his criticism to himself. Doesn't sound as cool but the message is clear.
She has far more than those two albums, but those are the only two he's really familiarized himself with is what he's saying.
I love 2M2LN but this one just isn't doing anything for me. Tons of people I love but I'm just not feeling it.
Forgive me for asking, but am I missing something? This is chill as hell, but what's it got to do with DOOM and The Avalanches? That said, I think I'm going to have to listen to some more Jorja Chalmers.
This is really dope! But yeah, I want that Purple Mountains remix. I’m assuming Drag City couldn’t afford to clear the samples. Wonder if they might have reused the track elsewhere.
I can’t stand The Final Cut, but to each their own. I’d rather listen to Waters’ Amused To Death over that and Momentary Lapse, but I’ll take Division Bell over Amused. It’s a weird situation.
I’m a firm believer that Roger Waters did a lot to make Pink Floyd what they were, but it’s his insistence that everything come back to him that is so ridiculous. I’ve heard the music he did after leaving Floyd, and while some of it is good (some of it very good!), it’s not Pink Floyd. If it were, then there would be no question he did everything he claims, but it’s not. By that right, Pink Floyd after he left is a notably different beast, less about unified themes and more about just making good music. But they sound more like Pink Floyd than he does on his own, and it’s not like he doesn’t call up all his celebrity friends to back him up since he knows he can’t do it alone. Add to that his reputation of being a control freak and a bully who doesn’t want anyone to see anything other than his way and it’s obvious why nothing happens. He wants hired guns, and the musicians who spent years performing and being the blood and guts of the band refuse to be treated like that. Roger Waters wants to be looked at as the heart or brain of Pink Floyd, but they’re both useless if you cut off the arms, legs and tongue. I almost wish he would just let someone outside the group make the decisions for their catalog and he could say whatever he wants in books or whatnot. Life is short, and it’s getting shorter for him and the rest of Floyd. They shouldn’t spend their golden years fighting, and Waters doesn’t need to make everything out to be David and Goliath, with him insisting he’s the little guy despite being the one who has probably been the biggest threat to the band. It’s just a shame that he’s an angry old man rather than a wise elder or, even better, a healthy contributor to the continuing legacy of something he helped create.
That's more or less exactly what happened, and he fought tooth and nail to prevent them from using the name. There were even claims that he tried to "torture" members of the band mentally to make them feel they couldn't do anything without him. It gives the impression he really thought he owned them.
It’s wrong to continue the band without Rogers, but alright for Rogers to say “if I’m gone you can’t do this anymore”? There were other band members and he attempted to veto their opinions on the principal that he could. In response to what Jim said, Roger Waters might be more interesting, but I find him unfathomable. At least Gilmour wanted to play music, whereas Waters just like to talk about how important he is and look for opportunities to resurrect The Wall again. These are just my opinions of course, but I’d rather buy second hand copies of anything they did than give Waters more money for stuff he tries to take all the credit for.
Anyone else with me in not trusting anything Roger Waters says or does? I just can’t stand the guy and how he fights for absolute control over anything he has the slightest involvement with, good or bad. This is just more of his trying to rewrite history as if HE was Pink Floyd and only what he’s done is of any importance. What a putz.
This is basically exactly what I expected it to be, which is wonderful. Quiet may be the new loud once again.
I have to agree, it’s not perfect, but it’s a lot nicer than many other forums or comment sections I’ve visited. Sure, sometimes we screw up and one of us says something that upsets people (sorry for when that’s me), but most of us are here for the right reasons and are pretty positive. That’s a lot of why I’m here, along with Stereogum being far more enjoyable and informative than THAT OTHER SITE.
Reminds me of how PETA love to go after any celebrities big enough to get themselves attention.
