Lush - "For Love", anyone?
Is it unreasonable that I want the entire scene of Pete's fantasy and subsequent smirk on the couch as a .GIF? That made me laugh so hard you guys.
@Michael_ I sympathize with your Beatles/"Happy Birthday" analogy-- feeling indifferent toward The Beatles strictly as a listener in 2012 is understandable-- BUT, while there may be something to be said for the argument that they were working with a somewhat "clean slate", I think the claim that "anyone could have been The Beatles" is super misguided. Let's assume your argument is true that any band in The Beatles' position would have had an equal cultural/musical impact. If that is the case, then it is that much more fucking incredible that they happened to write the music that they did. The amount of melodic sophistication and structural elegance present in the majority of their work is mind-boggling. Off the top of my head: the key change in "Here There And Everywhere"; the guitar leads over the chorus of "Oh! Darling"; all of "Michelle". Even one of their simpler-sounding songs like "I Want To Hold Your Hand" is ripe for analysis on a music theory level. Obviously not everyone knows music theory, but I think the fact that the songs are so well composed on that level is a big part of why The Beatles continue to resonate with listeners-- people respond to those musical cues even if they don't realize it. Basically I'm saying that if The Beatles could have just settled for being Journey, it's crazy that they were The Beatles instead.
Stan Lee, Matt Groening and R.L. Stine have been placed in protective custody.
Where The Sad Things Are (planet Earth, lately) R.I.P. <3
Maybe "creepy" is subjective, but he is pretty much just kind of a dick. And it breaks my heart that he is Sally's main friend & confidant because she is clearly at the crossroads of becoming a real person and HE IS JUST A BAD INFLUENCE! Remember when he and his friend trashed the Draper house? Then in this episode when Sally told him how her grandma broke her ankle and Glen laughed and said something dick-ish and got Sally to laugh in agreement? That was so =[ Glen is that kid at the pool party who reaches into the chip bag with wet hands.
I can definitely tell that Pete is barrelling toward a breaking point, but I guess I just never considered that DEATH could be a possibility. I've been more caught up focusing on how he has invested all his energy into achieving the "old" cultural picture of success (a la Don), and now, just as he finally seems to have attained that ideal life, it's like he got on the wrong train as he watches the new cultural revolution of the 60s begin to take off. Now that I think about it, however, Pete committing suicide would be pretty brilliant and totally heartbreaking because of just how much sense it actually makes. I'm really interested in going back to look for specific pieces of foreshadowing now. Off the top of my head I count the mention of the gun he has at the office, the multitude of defeats he suffers this episode culminating in saying "I have nothing" to Don... actually maybe I don't have to look that hard at this. Regardless... WERTTREW GET BACK IN HERE WITH US!
Can you elaborate on why you think Pete is going to die? I'm intrigued.
With all the talk of murders lately on the show (Richard Speck, the sniper), I was SO scared a hook-hand was going to tap on the car window.
Big Brooms Inc. asked Sabrina to make a movie about what it means to #usebrooms Instead of making their movie she used the entire budget to become a teenage witch superhero and make a *different* movie about coming to terms with an "enchanted" new life. This is that movie.
OK THIS! This is what I've been waiting for-- can someone post this .gif but INCLUDING the priceless 1-second-long Carson reaction shot that follows OLG's zinger??? I'll even accept just the Carson reaction shot. Possibly my favorite moment of S1.
For me they have the most affecting vocals in music right now. I feel like Dirty Projectors are this warped soul/gospel band at heart.
Yeah, biggest thing that comes to mind was the time Betty straight up called her a lesbian, which was totally weird, and also the masturbating thing, though I don't remember what was on the TV...
Sally thread! What do you guys think about the scene in the beginning where Sally "accidentally" walks to Don's room and looks in at Megan on the bed? My roommate thinks she's got a crush on Megan and is a lesbian (she cited some other hints from previous episodes). I thought it was more just a thing about her loving her dad and wanting to be closer to him and therefore maybe she's intrigued by Megan because she got close to him. Anyone?
The Beatles 2 is an awesome band name.
Here's the deal: this would be a good comment if you cropped out about 5 paragraphs worth of outrageous condescension. Also you might want to ease up on the em dashes in a comment that's supposed to be criticizing someone else's writing style for reading too scholarly-- know what i mean?
YES! You're the best, librariansti <3 I'm really hoping when the time comes (ep. 6 or 7 I think) that somebody makes a gif of Carson's reaction to a certain memorable zinger that the countess makes to Matthew's mom while the two of them are sitting next to each other (I won't say the line for minor spoilers' sake). There's a quick shot of Carson turning his head and it's pretty much the best moment of season 1. Advanced warning!
Who's got a good Carson GIF for me?
I don't care if you have no responsibilities and stay home all day. No baby has any business being that drunk in the morning.
There was only one tragedy this episode :'( http://i.imgur.com/wUQV7.png
"Best" Coast, The "Only" Place, and now that artwork? I think she's launching a Soviet-style propaganda campaign for California, you guys. Probably in cahoots with Puro Instinct... http://cdn03.cdn.gorillavsbear.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/PURO-INSTINCT-STILYAGI-575x575.jpg
I hacked into their computers and found its programming code: http://nobodyputsbabyinahorner.files.wordpress.com/2010/04/kirstie_alley_twitter.jpg
I don't consider myself to be a mediocre leech onto funnier comments.
In related news, I thought this was a pretty good read: http://www.cracked.com/blog/6-things-rich-people-need-to-stop-saying/
I don't know if "sexy" is the right word, but it's definitely hard to not have a huge crush on her after watching some of her interviews.
What's the right format?? I SPENT SO LONG ON THIS GUYS
