Preview Gorillaz x James Murphy x Andre 3000 Collab “DoYaThang”

Next up in Converse’s “Three Artists, One Song” series (here are some previous ones) is the previously-announced collaboration between Gorillaz, James Murphy and Andre 3000. It’s officially out next week, but a snippet of the track, as well as a the-making-of video, surfaced online recently, both of which you can check out below. I’m partial to the Casablancas/Santigold/Pharrell one, but this sounds promising.

Vaura – “Drachma” (Stereogum Premiere)

The New York band Vaura play a warped, heady strain of metal, one that incorporates bits and pieces of black metal, post-rock, and prog, melting them all into one singular brooding sludge. The band includes members of bands like Gorguts, Dysrhythmia, and Kayo Dot but doesn’t sound too much like any of them. Their debut album Selenelion, mixed by Krallice’s Colin Marston, is out later this month, and we’ve got a download of the album track “Drachma,” as well as a trailer for the album and a list of the band’s upcoming shows. MellowHype – “45″

A bit of an open secret: MellowHype, the duo of rapper Hodgy Beats and producer Left Brain, are probably the most consistent musical unit within the noisy and notoriously scattershot Odd Future crew, and their forthcoming album Numbers could well turn out to be great. One track that won’t appear on Numbers is “45,” a dizzy and stoned rap track that Hodgy posted on his Tumblr recently. Click over here to hear it (via Pitchfork).

Young Dreams – “Young Dreams” Video

Young Dreams is Modular’s latest signing out of Bergen, Norway, a city that’s established a little bit of a reputation in the indie pop scene thanks to bands like Razika. Today they share their first single, “Young Dreams,” which comes paired with a somewhat creepy video, where I think the implication is that the kids’ parents have been killed off in some kind of zombie apocalypse and they have the run of their stark, Ikea-catalog-esque home to themselves. The presence of multiple Furbys — even though Furbys are overdue for a revival — isn’t helping me to relax, either. Maybe I’m reading into this too much, but those Scandanavian kids sure do get into some dark stuff, don’t they? Check out the video, directed by Kristoffer Borgli, after the jump and grab the MP3.

Quilt – “Young Gold”

On “Penobska Oakwalk,” Boston’s Quilt showcased a fresh take on well-worn folk rock textures, instilling a bit of color into vintage grooves. On “Young Gold,” it’s basically the same setup, but wont to chase down more swirling, psychedelic inclinations as the song reaches its climax. Stream the cut, which opens their forthcoming self-titled debut, after the jump.

Mazzy Star – “Lay Myself Down”

Just the other day, we wrote about Mazzy Star’s return and linked to a couple of previews for two new songs, “Common Burn” and “Lay Myself Down.” Today, the B-side “Lay Myself Down” has surfaced. Hear the track at Pitchfork.

Dirty Beaches – “Stye Eye”

The decomposing-rockabilly auteur Dirty Beaches has a new limited-edition single out. The A-side is a live version of “Lone Runner,” and the B-side is a pounding, squalid track called “Stye Eye,” previously only out on an even-more-limited cassette release. Listen to “Stye Eye” below.

Neutral Milk Hotel – “You’ve Passed”

Not so reclusive, all of the sudden, are we? After a successful stint at ATP, Jeff Mangum is back to post another unreleased track on his webpage, as he’s done with the unreleased demos for “Engine” and “Little Birds.” For a guy that basically couldn’t be found for a decade, the recent period of activity is a relative publicity tour. Which makes sense, as he’s got a box set coming out, doncha know; listen to the song on Neutral Milk Hotel’s site.

Mangum has also added a tour date in New Jersey, so here’s the revised version of his fall/winter tour:

Portland synth-pop duo/monthly mixtape veterans Blouse return with another cut from their self-titled Captured Tracks debut, “Time Travel.”

Ponytail – “Easy Peasy” Video (Stereogum Premiere)

Sadly, the joyous Baltimore art-punk band Ponytail is no more. They’ve broken up, for real this time. In a statement (reprinted below), they cite the difficulty of touring now that all their members live across the country. And they’ve left us with one final gift: An aquatic-themed video for “Easy Peasy,” the manic sugar-rush single from their 2011 album Do Whatever You Want To All The Time. The video intersperses live video with assorted found footage. Most of the video seems to concern sea creatures and people jumping into bodies of water, but we also get a quick shot of a hippo chasing a cheetah, which is so badass. Willy Siegel directs, and bears certain relation to Ponytail-singer Molly. Watch it and download the song below.
