Genuinely laughing at my desk at work the way Paak comes from off screen at 0:34...
Hell yeah. This fall is shaping up to have quite a release schedule.
self-titled: 9/10 helplessnessblues: 10/10 crack-up: 9.5/10 shore: 10/10
As a Christian in 2020 that is appalled at the state of affairs in this country and what it must look like to non-Christians when many 'Christians' are self-loving, others-hating and espouse the characteristics of our President. I can so identify with Sufjan's grappling of faith and country that it honestly hurts a bit. Especially since I was wide-eyed and optimistic just like he seemed to be back in 2005. Looking forward to hiding in a dark room and having a cathartic experience with this album this weekend.
While this is nice, i do miss the more krautrock/hip-hop side of BBNG and hope they bring some of that back on V.
'The Louder I Call, The Faster It Runs' was in my top 5 last year and I don't regret it looking back. Really looking forward to whatever they have came up with...
I put up a small list without thinking too deeply and my omission of 175 is already haunting me ten minutes later. That's an easy top 10 that I omitted....
Cutting myself off arbitrarily at 15 songs and ranking them according to my gut instinct.... 1) Fleet Foxes - "Helplessness Blues" 2) Father John Misty - "Ballad of the Dying Man" 3) LCD Soundsystem - "I Can Change" 4) Jamie XX - "Loud Places" 5) Parquet Courts - "Violence" 6) Todd Terje - "Alfonso Muskedunder" 7) Neil Cowley Trio - "The City and Stars" 8) Joshua Redman/Brad Mehldau - "Always August" 9) James Blake - "Limit To Your Love" 10) Kendrick Lamar - "Sing About Me, I'm Dying of Thirst" 11) Car Seat Headrest - "Bodys" 12) Frank Ocean - "Chanel" 13) Kate Tempest - "Europe is Lost" 14) Here We Go Magic - "How Do I Know" 15) Big Thief - "Not"
I just assumed Janelle Monae would have multiple spots in your numbered section given your avatar over the years. P.s. I like your list more than all the rest of the user-lists i've seen..
Obviously fluid and this is off the top of the dome more or less. As a Northeast US Urban Christian, I'd respectfully disagree with this at least for my geography (which I realize is one of the least religious areas of the country). The majority of under-40's in the church in my neck of the woods lean left and abhor Trump.
The fact that Coldplay is calling this experimental says so much about their career so far...
Queen Adrianne! Loving the time in the spotlight that Big Thief is getting currently. The more the merrier on this bandwagon of ours.
Also, great profile Michael.
Tone and timbre wise, Adrianne's voice has to be the most distinct voice going right now. Every growl, crack and emphasis drives the words home like nobody since Tom Waits for me. Just goes to convince me how truly she's feeling what she writes down to her very soul. And that's to say nothing of her lyrical and songwriting ability. If she's not the best songwriter going currently, I'd challenge you to name someone better. Two Hands can't come soon enough...!
Sympathy quickly became my favorite song off FOTB and is one of 2 or 3 songs on the album that I still listen to. The Haim songs are borderline unlistenable at this point...
I think so, it's slowly becoming revitalized over the last few years. That said, I still go to more concerts in Ithaca and Rochester than I do in Syracuse which bums me out. Plus with a baby on the way I doubt I'll be pulling off those road trips nearly as often...
Even though it's not, this feels like a sleight pointed at my hometown (Syracuse) . Maybe I'm just defensive cause I've seen too many good tours skip right over us.
'gummers can camp out at the rentaballoon household... just a 30 min drive away!
That's funny, cause I've been shouting the same thing except about Age of Adz. Give me weird Sufjan over intimate Sufjan all day e'erday.
