Had the same thought. I think the bassist Sean left AFTER the recording of their last album, so this one should sound quite a bit different.
Seeing these dudes and Parquet Courts in the same month. Rock is alive and well.
Cuz I lik how he sings about a three legged dog, which is pretty funny!
If we're talking specifically The Beatles, I couldn't pick. If we're talking solo; McCartney, because of Ram. If we're talking personalities—Ringo.
Is there racism involved here? Maybe. Is there money and other politics involved? Probably. I hardly think its simply a black and white issue. Not sure why every media outlet seems to be seeing everything with such narrow vision. Instead of generalizing and assuming things, why not look into the nomination process?
Generalize much? The same thing was said about Beavis & Butt-head. They're easy to attack, but I think both have featured some very intelligent parody and satire of our society.
I'm attracted to attractive women in bands. Am I a misogynist?
Saying The Beatles are the most irrelevant band of all time is as logical as saying oxygen is the most irrelevant chemical element of all time.
Kanye should compare himself to those stick figure family stickers you see on the back of minivans.
Kind of Blue doesn't need to be replaced. It's a great album. These lists do need to either consult with people that actually know about genres like Jazz, The Blues, Fun, etc, or just not include them. Including a few token choices just creates the impression that they're genres that are important, yet barely relevant. At least Rolling Stone made a conscious effort to look at music as a whole. This list has a lot of good stuff, but to me it all feels written by and for a certain audience.
Was pretty shocked not to see Gone For Good and Phantom Limb. Both are up there with New Slang for me.
I'd go for Dazed and Confused, Pretty In Pink, and Stand By Me. Maybe The Wanderers, but that one is probably too obscure. The Big Chill is great, but it feels like more of a Motown hits compilation than a hand picked soundtrack. Hell, I'd throw on Adventureland and Can't Hardly Wait too.
I could list bands i think should be listed (The Band, Big Star, CCR, Warren Zevon...), but I think the biggest travesty is that no jazz albums are included.
“Untitled #7,” a track about, “a sexually ambiguous dolphin called Tonay who is on his way across the ocean to meet his estranged Dad and confront him about the Christmas that tore them apart,” Do people actually think this sort of thing is cool? That song is pretty good, but that pretentious, look-how-hip-we-are song description really turned me off.
The great thing about this doc is that Murray is just so loveable and genuine. The same can't be said for a lot of the subjects in docs like these. Watching Vinyl years ago turned me off collecting for a while, because the dudes were such creeps.
Some time ago I came across a nice haul in a thrift store. It obviously belonged to a fan of soul/funk. James Brown, Marvin Gaye, The Shirelles, etc. Was not a huge one, but there was some awesome stuff. Ritchie Havens Something Else Again was in there, and it turned out to be the gem of the bunch. That boy could play a mean guitar and sitar.
Good point. I'm thinking more in terms of design history. Steinweiss literally invented the album cover, and cover art, so i think he's done more than anyone. At least in that respect. Iconic imagery though, yeah, I've been mesmerized by that banana all my life. Think I'd put whoever did Whipped Cream and Other Delights over Warhol though. Now that cover in enduing.
Big loss. His covers really defined the 70's. Why compare him to Warhol though? Granted Sticky Fingers and The Velvet Underground & Nico are great, but he only designed a handful, and not all of them are good. Silk Electric is pretty terrible actually. Storm should be mentioned alongside true masters like Alex Steinweiss (Columbia), and Reid Miles (Blue Note), not an artist who happened to do a few covers.
List would have been great if 77 were in the top 5 where it belonged. Otherwise, not bad. What we really need is a best songs lists. Now that would be interesting.
Shouldn't he be back on his Anti-Canada stuff? it is that time of year.
