Same! A large part of my musical year last year was dedicated to the triumvirate of Ratboys, The Beths, and Snarls, which all scratched a nostalgic 90's itch for me in their own ways but all feel tied together in my mind because of that.
Looks like Liam Finn is part of the band now (as is his brother). I loved his early solo stuff, think probably because of a write up here, and he put on a very fun one man show.
Just popping in here 355 comments deep to say that James Vincent McMorrow is a very good and interesting who evolves a lot from album to album and is worth checking out. His song "Headlights" was my favorite song this year: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EvhWbkXt4qk
Curious about that last answer, I know when Shore came out Robin had said he basically did this whole thing himself, but for the next one he plans on writing with the band more. I guess they haven't picked that up yet. Will be interesting to see what that yields.
As a National stan and not a Taylor Swift fan, this sound a lot more like what I was hoping Folklore would sound like.
Man, what a wonderful thing to be hearing great new music from The Antlers. Really digging the vibe of these new tracks. For what it’s worth, they responded to someone on Twitter who asked if there was a new album coming with “quite possibly” so that’s exciting too.
Also, the new site looks great!
Tough list to make. My best stab at it: Flume Skinny Love Re: Stacks Perth Holocene Calgary 33 God 8 Circle Naeem Faith
This is so good. It's very exciting to see amazing artists continue to somehow get even better.
SVE on a Local Natives track is a fun thing to see. I really liked and was surprised by Violet Street.
Not terribly surprised by this, though still bummed to have it confirmed. It’s interesting to me that he opted for such an Americana sound given The National moved away from it years ago. Will give this one a try but that is decidedly not where my current musical headspace is. As a side note, I also find it interesting that people really love SWB, which I find the coldest and least inviting National album, and really dislike IAETF, which I thought was a really strong if slightly bloated course correction.
It’s amazing how easily these 90s revival songs trigger the perfect blend of nostalgia and happiness for me. Digging these Beabadoobee songs, which I hadn’t heard before, but for my money, Snarls is my favorite of the crop.
Seems like I’m in the minority here but the piano driven stuff like 00000 Million, U (Man Like), is my least favorite bon iver mode, so this one isn’t totally my jam, but excited to see new songs continue to get rolled out nonetheless.
More bands should be as good as this band.
I remain largely ambivalent about this band, but I have to say, seeing the seemingly weekly updates for months now about their imminent album release seems really fucking exhausting.
This band makes me so damn happy, and two years after their debut, I still listen to it (And their EP) all the time and not tired at of it at all. That said, extremely excited for more to add to the rotation!
As a lifelong Pearl Jam fan who's obsession has definitely faded a lot but still enjoys them and seeing them live, but also never actively puts them on, I'm looking forward to spending a couple months with this album before mostly forgetting about it.
Logged in to say basically this, so I'll just upvote and agree!
I was also thinking it kind of sounds like EL VY.
Since I don’t think I saw it anywhere, Other Lives recently announced they have a new one out next year and I’m very much looking forward to it.
