Really looking forward to that Kauan album, "Raivo" is already holding down my SOTY spot. Preordered the version that comes with a tabletop RPG. Also excited for the new Aara.
Get well soon, Ian!
You were the first person I thought of when I saw the news this morning, because I knew she meant a lot to you. Thank you for sharing these beautiful words and memories, phospho. And that video interview was very comforting to watch this evening. Somehow it feels like she can't ever really be gone.
According to the outpatient packet they gave me, bacteremia "can cause a life-threatening reaction called sepsis[...]" So yeah I'm guessing there are different degrees of it. I don't think mine quite got to that point. As for if it can self correct, I wouldn't risk it in the future. As soon as you think you might have indications of a blood infection, seek treatment.
Nice, that's what I like to hear. Rrad the intro earlier, but haven't checked out the blurbs yet.
I loved Svrm's last one (even bought it on cassette!) so this should be right in my zone.
For sure. Usually with the type of heavy music I tend towards, it's like "Do I actually want to listen to this whole 90 minute funeral doom album tonight?" Whereas with PoG, it's "Oh shit, might as well listen to this for a third time in a row." A 26 minute album from them really does feel remarkably full.
What the!? I've never injected anything in my life, but if I was going to, I sure as shit wouldn't start with shroom tea. Good lord.
Anyway, yeah sepsis can be rough apparently, I'm just glad I didn't sustain any organ damage. I had a resting heart rate of 140 when I came in, but that quickly stabilized to around 115 once they got me on Vancomycin.
I'm lucky in that at 34 years old, this is the first time I'd had to spend even a night in a hospital. But yeah it sucked. The highlight was waiting up until 10pm last night so I could blast PoG on my headphones in my dark depressing room as soon as it dropped.
Spent 5 days in the hospital with a blood infection (I had some sort of full body rash for two weeks leading up to that). I got out today, though I have to administer antibiotics into a little IV thing in my arm for the next 6 weeks. Fucking point is, that Portrayal of Guilt album is hitting just right today. Bleak and heavy, just what the doctor ordered. (And this band is totally new to me, so I was able to check out their debut for the first time to boot.) Hope everyone has a good weekend!
Yeah, I can't decide if I love it as much as Burial Shrouds, and yet it still ended up being my metal album of the year. Sivyj Yar just has probably my favorite bass playing in all of metal, which is not something I tend to expect from black metal. (And I tend to forget all about that intro track when I'm thinking about the album.)
Hell yeah, I was just reading the blurbs you wrote above, and I particularly loved what you said about Grief. You put into words what I love about that album better than I could! Surprised it's not showing up on more lists, but that probably just owes to the sheer shit-ton of great metal that came out this year.
Quite a few albums I haven't heard yet in that top 10, including the number one album. Looking forward to diving into those. It's been a rough year, but there was a lot of great metal to help us through. Here are my favorites:
Sivyj Yar - Grief
Cult of Fire - Nirvana
Oranssi Pazuzu - Mestarin Kynsi
Spectral Lore / Mare Cognitum - Wanderers: Astrology Of The Nine
Sadness - Atna
Unreqvited - Empathica
Violet Cold - Noir Kid
Vuur & Zijde / Impavida
Olhava - Ladoga
Dolorangst - Катастрофа Внутри
Paysage d'Hiver - Im Wald
Esoctrilihum - Eternity of Shaog
Svrm - Занепад
Al-Namrood - Wala'at
Hiraeth
Autumn's Dawn - Dying Ember
Drown - Subaqueous
Turia - Degen van Licht
Karg - Traktat
Fluisteraars - Bloem
I would imagine that Mare Cognitum / Spectral Lore split helped get us there. And in my case, Sadness, Violet Cold, and Unreqvited probably helped push it to #1.
