My top song was "forever" by Charli XCX (who was also my most played artist). I was in the top 0.1% for her, which is also not very surprising for me. My top genre was something called "voidgaze", which is a word I've never seen before but also makes a lot of sense.
Always nice to have some Sadness in one's life! I went with Atna, even though it's an EP, but Alluring would have made my list otherwise.
Fuck yeah, Deep Sea Diver!
Always nice to see some Ellis love!

Ellis - born again 8. Oranssi Pazuzu - Mestarin Kynsi 9. Spectral Lore / Mare Cognitum - Wanderers: Astrology of the Nine 10. Sadness - Atna 11. Rina Sawayama - SAWAYAMA 12. JFDR - New Dreams 13. After Dark 3 how i'm feeling now is the main album that I constantly came back to this year, and the only one I could listen to two or three times in a row on any given night. So that was an easy top pick for me. That album just made a lot of sense this year. Probably my new favorite Charli album.
I'm sorry for your loss. I'm glad you have music to console you and help you remember all the good times you shared together.
I like this! (And mobile log-in is working now!) :)
Sure! My playlists are there to be stalked, or I wouldn't make 'em public.
"TOY" was remixed perfectly for this After Dark comp. So that might be my favorite, but Farah's "Boyz R Bad" and JOON's "Worse Things Than Feeling Lonely" also stood out to me. That last one in particular has such a great beat.
Holy shit. This thing really takes off at "Boyz R Bad" into the "TOY" remix.
Don't sleep on the new Deep Sea Diver album.
Looking forward to Deep Sea Diver's Impossible Weight, also out on the 16th.
Wait, have I just been a dansolo sock puppet account this whole time? If so, you put a lot of work into me. You gave me a real life body and everything!
Dang. I was afraid it might be due to something like that.
I'll probably make an appearance.
I don't like that hunch! I don't like it one bit!
Is Heather not going to be part of SALEM anymore? 😟 This song is great, but it's hard to imagine a SALEM album without her.
I love Never Let Me Go. I can't imagine how it would feel to read that as a high school student, I think your students are in for a treat! Good luck, I hope things get better for you all. Ishiguro is my favorite novelist. Remains of the Day, Unconsoled, When We were Orphans, those are all incredible.
I like this a lot.
I'd suggest U2 and Arcade Fire out of these. I really love those two albums. I've got quite a few blind spots on this list myself, though.
He's gonna ogle that dude's monthly electricity usage so hard.
Yeah I'm just glad that my mom is into Enya and Loreena McKennitt! That's some quality mom music.
Not sure what's going on anymore, but luckily no one's going to see this anyways. And if you do, well, cool find.
One of Emperor's members stabbed a gay guy to death (37 times) and then kicked him in the head repeatedly. We will never hear that man's side of the story. So... Taylor Swift wins this round, you sick fucking pieces of shit.
OK, yeah, this is a great intro! I feel like no band names could be be completely denotative, because readers/listeners are going to automatically employ their own connotations, right? Also, I would agree (I think) that the quality of the name isn't as important as the quality of the music (or the quality of our knowledge of the music that the name stands for). For example, I won't listen to Burzum because I know who he is, even though that name itself would otherwise mean nothing to me. I know that he's influenced a lot if artists I like, but I consider his music to be something to be avoided. Although I guess that is based neither on word recognition nor music recognition, but rather on personality recognition. I don't know.
"Seance" would be a pretty good name for a funeral doom band. "Instead, they powered on with Buttocks" has got to be one of the best parts of this month's entry. Another choice intro, Ian!
There is actually no way to delete an account now. Bdkbidboebosbodndondobdodndondpdnpdnfonfpdnodnodnodnodhodbozhodhodhd9hd9hdobdicdibron3pndpnxoxbkdbidvisbodnfpndpndpdnoshodboxbodvievei H 8bxodhoxnldnoebodh9dhdohd9
Nevermind, it seems to be harder to do now.
I think you just have to email Scott (from whatever email account is linked to your 'Gum account). I've done it before, and I'll probably do it again. It's kind of pointless though, because it's considerably easier to sign up for an account than it is to delete one. You might as well just take a long break. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ But if you really want to delete your account, it's definitely doable.
Great write-up, Tom! (Although I'm sad that "epiphany" didn't get a mention, in either the article or the comments. Am I the only one who loves that song? I think it's a very atypical and notable song for Taylor, and it surprised me in a good way.)
That NINA song would be at home on the Drive soundtrack. Good stuff. I didn't notice you say anything that bad in the Kanye thread. I wouldn't worry about it. I have absolutely melted down in a Stereogum thread before, and people are still nice to me. I think folks here tend to move on pretty quickly. :)
"Shouldn'ta Done That" is a great closer. This album should've come out during a better summer, but I guess you take what you can get.
I almost spaced that the new George Clanton + Nick Hexum album is out now! I'd forgotten just how great "Crash Pad" and "King for a Day" are. Happy weekend.
