Deadlines is pretty amazing.
I understand the somewhat deflated response, but I see this as a meditation on chronic depression and somewhat timely. My guess is the retrospective view of this album will be far more enthusiastic than the contemporary view. I also don’t see this as some sort of Kid A left turn. It fits in well with the total catalogue.
A 10 is over-reactionary bullshit. Is this "better" than Blonde and To Pimp A Butterfly? Fetch is a GREAT album - but a 10 indicates an album that will resonate for decades...and at this point I'm not even sure this is "better" than Apple's previous two albums. It probably is - but this isn't Pet Sounds or Revolver. The response feels more like a symptom of these dark af times as opposed to an actual reflection on the music on the album.
Chance is joyous but we are all righteously and rightfully joyless. Chance is a relic of an era that feels like generations ago even though it was only 4 years past.
