The best part of that video is "Twin Fantasy." He should cover Seigfried...THAT is the best song on Blonde (and maybe the best song of the past 10 years).
This is great. I really love how Beach House created what is mostly their own sound and somehow after 6/7 albums they can stay with the overall sound but still *sound* fresh and new. There is no reinvention in their catalogue and yet each album sounds distinct and unique. It’s truly a feat and sets them apart from other great acts.
I like Planetarium, but it isn't in the same class as Carrie and Lowell. The Eb Major version of this new toon is "main album" worthy. It also makes you wonder how far along Sufjan was with the "Oregon" concept album before abandoning that idea to focus entirely on his relationship with his mother.
We have “Killer Queen” - we don’t need a biopic...everything we could ever want to know is right there in that song. - and it’s guaranteed to blow your mind.
This is such a train wreck - and really why do we need this? Since apparently the legendary debauchery won’t be included. Do we need an actor portraying the Live Aid concert? You can watch the actual concert online.
Justin's falsetto sounds amazing in this environment. He should go to a cabin somewhere and write and record an intimate acoustic album. It might be a hit, yes?
The issues is breadth and depth - Sufjan's catalogue has a breadth that is unusual (from folk to electronica to quasi classical to jazz to hip hop) and a depth that is striking. His ability to master various forms and genres really does set him apart from most songwriters in any generation. But at his best - Illinois, MI, Adz, C&L, Swans - there really are few better. In a way, he is the quintessential restless artist - maybe even more so than Thom Yorke (often viewed as THE restless artist of the last 20 years) - although Yorke certainly has a larger footprint.
He is definitely the best songwriter of his generation. There really aren't many close. He won't get the same type of recognition - only because we live in very fragmented, segmented times - but he is every bit as skilled as the best of earlier generations.
