The Broadberry is a deeply strange venue, the last show I went to before COVID was there (Beach Fossils w/ Negative Gemini), but it's kind of weirdly souless? And yeah the sound is rough.
I'm pretty sure the article got it right, the performance was filmed at the Virginia Reparatory Theatre on Broad St, not the Byrd which is where the music video was filmed. I imagine it was easier to film a live performance at the Theatre than at the Byrd, hence the move.
One light in a shit year was Bandcamp Friday. I was lucky enough to work from home this year, and being unable to go to bars meant lots of extra money that I could spend on stuff like Light In The Attic reissues, The Storehouse Bandcamp Comp, and albums from smaller artists who could definitely use it and who were often introduced to me by this site (shout out to Little Kid). It was also a good year to get really into artists (Neil Young, Joni Mitchell) and genres (American Primitive) that I knew I liked but hadn’t fully plumbed the depths of their discographies. I now have strong Jaco Pastorius and also Kottke opinions! I want you all to have better years than this one, and I want Big Thief to reschedule their show at The National. 1 : Nap Eyes: Snapshot of a Beginner 2 : Waxahatchee: Saint Cloud 3 : Fleet Foxes: Shore 4 : Andy Shauf: The Neon Skyline 5 : Gunn-Truscinski Duo: Soundkeeper 6 : Tame Impala: The Slow Rush 7 : Trace Mountains: Lost in the Country 8 : Widowspeak: Plum 9 : Imaginary Softwoods: Annual Flowers in Color 10 : North Americans: Roped In
Egghunt by the way is a neat little label in Richmond that (appropriately enough for the name) is a bit of an incubator for local artists who are leveling up. Their biggest claim to fame is probably releasing the first Lucy Dacus album
“ Granduciel’s built whole worlds” Seems like a lot of bands are finding sweet spots in exploring those worlds. The Killers last album is decidedly Drugsian, and Wild Pink’s whole aesthetic seems The Death Cab On Drugs. Throw in that really underrated Trace Mountains album from this year and you’ve got the makings of a whole little micro genre of Wodcore. Call it New Weird Americana maybe?
You know, the notedly apolitical/conservative basketball player Dwyane Wade
WOD day is a good day The Waterboys influence is strong on this one!
Hey this is lovely! I remember reading last year Crying was on long term hiatus and the singer was working on some solo stuff, I’d love another full length from them.
What a great band. Snapshot of a Beginner is my favorite album of the year so far, and both of these tracks are great. Perfect additions, I’d love to see them live one day, feel like I missed something special when they had to cancel that tour with Ryley Walker filling in on guitar
WHAT???? Oh no this is fucking awful. An amazing singer and an amazing guy
Look, we all saw the cover of Within & Without, we knew Mr. Greene is a bit of a horn dog, but what's bugging me here is what the hell is he doing with his voice? He went from breathy dream pop voice to I guess what he thinks sexy guy voices are supposed to sound like? I don't know, it's weirding me out
Alright I have to say it: High Spirits sounds like a heavier full band version of Mr. Universe from Steven Universe
I was mostly thinking about “Truth Sets In” when I wrote that, which blows the drums out in a way that mimics lo-fi. A more accurate statement would’ve probably been “tried to mimic Girls like seemingly every other west coast indie pop band at the time”, that’s on me
A low fi indie pop group that rode the early 2010s vaguely dreamy/beach sound. Their 2010 self-titled album got some pretty good press but they never managed to move beyond the buzz. That album had some pretty sex-focused song titles “Summer Cum”, “Five Little Sluts” etc that I remember being vaguely off putting at the time and are now creepy as fuck in retrospect
I guarantee you that the only thing that’s changed is that victims now have a greater belief that their statements will be taken seriously and a platform to amplify their voices. This shit exists across the board.
Here’s some trash that people threw out on the sidewalk playing a perfectly good piano
I’ve never been able to really get into Woods until this new album, that’s a great choice
