I've slept on Big Thief for years, but based on this review I decided to just dive in and listen to their four albums. My immediate lukewarm beige ass take is that there are two Big Thiefs (Thieves??). There's the spare arrangement, folkie songwriter stuff. Capacity was my first time hearing them, and that was the vibe I got, which didn't appeal to me. I don't like to "engage" with things. But Masterpiece really worked for me, as well as Two Hands. These albums feel more like the second Big Thief - just an incredibly satisfying (and FUN) rock ass rock band. I really like that version of Big Thief - intrigued to see which shows up on this new album!
Just had to log on to this site's comment section to acknowledge how well written the three paragraph blurb teeing up the album is/was.
So vivid and incisive I found myself reading it aloud like an incredibly enthusiastic alt-rock radio DJ.
But yes, great stuff. I will now listen to this album.
I listened to rent i pay on a laptop for the first time about 2/3 weeks ago and i thought it was ok, then i played the youtube video through my brothers surround sound last night and I'm still picking up my teeth. What a song.
I enjoyed 212 but that was many moons ago. All of this talk from her is just bluster if she doesn't release any material worth listening to. Isn't that her job?
