I'm REALLY glad Sgum did this. One, for the simple fact that is reminded me to go back and listen to all of their old stuff, which i've for some reason never done. Like a lot of people, i really only knew the big 80s albums. I loved those old songs they'd do live, but for some reason never enough to go back and get those albums apparently. Maybe those old ones just weren't in stock a lot when i was younger, i definitely don't remember seeing any older ones than Stained Class.
But the 2nd reason is I'm glad they had the sense to 'out-source' this one to someone who clearly REALLY knows what he's doing. Like everyone else, i'm really impressed with the detail, and ranking them just on the strength of songs and whole albums vs hits/sales is definitely the way to go, for all bands. I'm making my Stained Class/Sad Wings cd for my car as we speak, RAWK N ROOOOWL!
I remember when they first came out and were on Conan, i figured they musta been Jack White buddies since their name was such an obvious homage/ripoff, as well as their 2-man drum 'n guitar minimal sound. Plus, White Stripes-Michigan, Keys-Ohio. BUT clearly i was wrong about that haha, it was 100% ripoff all the way, pitiful. You wanna BORROW a sound and like, add to it? Change it up? Fine. But these direct ripoff acts are just fucking sad.
good news is, it's such a good song, it STILL sounds good...and maybe our lil girl growing up will help spread the word of Morrissey to the kids? I'm guessing Radiohead will be next...just PLEASE not Creep:)
My only St Vincent complaint was that capo on the headstock of her perty white Musicman...it no makey senseY, why, what? is it a full concert and u need that for the next song yer jumping right into? weird. i guess my other ticky tack complaint would be that wacky hair she's sticking with vs being her normal cute self BUT oh well, you hang out with David Byrne for a minute and what do you expect to happen?
The HBO show will be cool, it will be an excuse for people to flashback to classic albums and show tons of out-takes etc, that shit is always awesome and interesting. BUT as far as Grohl and cred goes, i wouldn't worry an ounce about all of the collab stuff, i'd just worry about Foo Fighter music. Those last few albums have just been...disappointing. Specially the last one with all the garage rock/going back to our roots hype it didn't even come close to delivering.
On the last 2 tours they have cut back on The Bends but they STILL play a couple songs here n there, he must be on crack. I know Street Spirit was brought back from the dead lately, and even though i understand why they put Fake Plastic Trees to bed for awhile, that one definitely needs to make a more consistent comeback to the main set, it's just too fucking good. But as must as i'll forever love The Bends to death, I'm 1000x more horrified at the thought of losing OK Computer songs off the setlist...any less than 3 and i want to shoot myself. But Creep? In comparison to those songs? Fuck that, that songs been all but ruined by the billion cover versions, by people that don't know shit about the band and their 200 better songs. Save Creep for the once in a blue moon pile, when they're in the mood:)
Factually he IS correct, i think. I believe he means it's a follow-up lyrical concept wise...a continuation of those themes. Obviously he's had albums in between, and even though he's fairly old now i'm pretty sure he's not that senile.
why did they even whine, they weren't really 'opening' for them clearly, that's a full fucking set if i've ever seen one. now if they only had a half hour like normally shat upon opening bands, then i'd totally get the whining. god this reminds of poor radiohead opening for alanis in 96...and US poor fans having to decide whether to support that whore with a $30+ ticket to only see our fav band for 30 mins...she shoulda given them 15 mins more.
