Fantastic genius and sage/poet. You are missed Mr. Cash.
Thanks for the fantastic write-up. Brit-pop was best exemplified by the mighty 3: Oasis, Radiohead and Blur.
The 3 comments above me are the best comments in this entire story. drgonzo, Jon and cerebus all have something vital to say. The questions of what constitutes responsible art and what constitutes even art itself are just too deep to post on a blog. For what its worth, bottom line, Tyler has the right to rap, do whatever he does, but there should be a line of repsonsibility associated with it. Alot of the hostility directed towards him is because of the flippant and socially irresponsible behavior he exemplifies. We can all argue back and forth wether he''s talented or a musician. That shouldn't have been a point that I raised. But being socially responsible IS a valid point. I get kinda fed up with the tylers, kanyes and lady gaga's of music. They all have a sense of incredible arrogance and no moral quams. Sometimes being disgusted with it is ok. And furthermore, being downvoted for being disgusted by it is even MORE ok.
I really loved Primary Colours and SKying had some great moments. I don't know if they are as popular in US as they are here in UK, but this is a fantastic band that deserves some good exposure when their album comes out :)
The Horrors are tops!
Wrong is subjective. But I appreciate your passion for an artist you like and believe in. Honestly, I'm equally as passionate and I always gotta respect that. To each their own.
Well Sean, I can appreciate your sincerity. I, for example, fail to see the genius in Pavement and Kanye West. However, I stand by my convictions but have softened my own dogmatic disgust on aforementioned bands/artists. I can appreciate your conviction on what you like or don't like and I apologize for thinking you were trolling. Geoff Emerick was a big part of The Beatles. Keep in mind too however that the white album was essentially produced by The Beatles themselves. That was when they were arguably at the peak of their powers.
SALEM was a perfect example. THAT was brutal. SALEM were a band intent on not giving 2 shits and a band that had no talent. At least Julian and CO. are brilliant in their own right. SALEM are an example of what happens when apathy and lack of talent collide at the Fader Fort. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=88zQ_sf6BMg
Yeah I have to agree with Scott and most of the comments here. Julian is usually so incredibly electrifying and The Strokes are fantastic, but this performance sounds stifled and his vocals sound rushed/slurred. Usually his delivery is still on point even with his style, but I can hear it go flat. Many bands can make up for occasional flatness with energy, but that seems strained too. Still love your work though Jules. Nobodys perfect all the time.
Cal, I appreciate you sticking up for an artist you like and believe in, because I would do precisely that for one I liked. But Tyler's lack of responsibility and conduct for his lyrics/behavior, I find appalling.
If I sound patronizing, accept my apology. My fuse is short for Tyler. Period.
Hey, they might not have played their instruments, but their self destructive pathos was revolutionary for its time and genuine, but played with a certain sensibility that is missing. For example, I implore you to read Steve Albini's take on ugly people making beautiful art and vice versa. It's pretty spot on:http://www.vulture.com/2011/08/steve_albini_hates_on_odd_futu.html
And I know I've posted alot on this here, but I do give Tyler credit for talking about the tragedy and sort of apologizing for it and making it clear it had nothing to do with his intention. If he were to apologize for his misogyny, homophobia, racism and rape culture, then he might be a socially responsible artist. Go figure! People might actually be more interested in his art.
No, it's just that people have a tight clasped grasp on their culture idols. They dig his subversive nature for whatever progressive reasons they think it suits. But its an aberration of responsibility as an ''artist'' when their behavior and sad moral stance constitute the bulk of their image. Welcome to the 21rst century. An era of declining of artistic standards.
Guiriguiri, I think most people are making that connection, for better or for worse. Truth is that even if there was no SXSW tragedy, inciting a riot is pretty serious stuff. Add on top of that the fact that his behavior is like a brutish ten year old and you've got the recipe for people questioning what exactly is his relevance in ''music''. I could go on and on as I strongly dislike him, his ilk and supporters, but what the heck, you know?
And El Goodo, if pointing out writing flubs is your way to get yo superior on, then have at it :) But you'll never convince me that Tyler is a musician (really? Like what instruments does he play! Does he write songs with melody? Really?) and that Yonkers is a great song.
Not a valid argument in defense of him, kind sir. Try, try again.
I was tired of him 2 years ago, and more tired today then ever. Tyler is a non musician masquerading as talent where people can't tell the difference between art and shlock. I don't like eminem's music, but eminem's flow and abilities are in a league far beyond Tyler. i may not have liked Johnny Rotten, but his shock rock provocateur stylings were in a league also far beyond Tyler. You like his ''music'',? Great. But its incredibly reprehensible for him to toe the line and then go far beyond it after people died at SXSW and many injured. Somehow, attempting to incite loss of crow control seems the very essence of the word ''pathetic'' and borderline sick. I hope fans of music arnt blind to two pretty obvious conclusions: He isn't that talented and he is an out of control brat masquerading as a grown up. For all his racism, homophobia, sexism, nihilistic lyrics and reckless behavior, will people still blindly follow him when he eventually succeeds in people getting killed?
