Swing Lo Magellan for album, though I did really like the new Deerhoof and almost voted for it. My actual favorite albums are probably Accelerando by Vijay Iyer and Made Possible by the Bad Plus. But those are "jazz," which, as far as Sgum is concerned, doesn't exist.
I love music with a beat!
This band kinda sounds like Animal Collective
Ah, OK. I didn't think that seemed right. Hope you enjoyed your time here.
Wait, Tom lives in Chicago? Hope to see you around soon, dude!
High five to Amrit for giving the HM to Vijay Iyer's Accelerando. It's my most-played album of the year by far. If any of you kids ever think to yourselves something along the lines of "jazz musicians are so out of touch; there hasn't been a good jazz album in 50 years," do yourselves a favor and check out Mr. Iyer's work.
The eff would people downvote someone praising Dr. John? Do you kids know what music is?
I inherited my generation's vague disdain for disco as a teen, but learned how awesome it truly can be when I got a gig playing drums in a disco cover band (non-ironic -- everyone else was more than twice my age). I always loved playing, and listening to, Bad Girls, Hot Stuff, Heaven Knows and Last Dance. The beats, melodies, and of course, Mrs. Summer's singing are undeniable. RIP.
It reminds me of the medleys in the big Vegas-style production shows I played while working on a cruise ship. Besides having that touch of Brian Wilson's genius, of course.
Not that I have, like, ever, uh, watched The Voice, but someone told me that a girl on that show did a really terrible version of the song too: http://www.nbc.com/the-voice/video/lindsey-pavao-somebody-i-used-to-know/1394345 Why isn't Gotye fighting back about that?
I'm in support of Annie getting a little crazier.
No Bon Iver? That's it, I'm removing Stereogum from my bookmarks. Wait what is this list for?
I just sang The Weight at karaoke on Saturday, for real. It was my first time ever singing karaoke, too. Mr. Helm is a master.
Many thanks for this dispatch, Michael_. I really enjoyed reading it. I just have one issue, though: you said the Weeknd "absolutely met all expectations in his highly anticipated Coachella debut with a sultry mix of all the best from last year’s mixtape trilogy." I know I wasn't there, but I watched the live stream and Mr. Tesfaye sounded very uneven vocally throughout the whole set. Did you not notice this? I'm really surprised that there wasn't a stronger reaction about his performance. Not that I wanna be a Debbie Downer for the folks who liked his set, but are we really past the point of expecting singers to be good at singing?
Scoring David Fincher films?
Alright, RJ, you did a more than adequate job of explaining yourself. Next time I'm in the record store I'll pick up the 12" and give it a second thought.
These are both super dope. Looking forward to the full album. But I am wondering: who out there buys these 12" singles? I bought both of their full-lengths and paid to see them live last year, but even I find the thought of purchasing a bunch of 12" singles that will eventually end up on another album kinda cray.
The #1 thing I want from my pop stars is for them to tell me how inadequate I am, and how excellent they are.
Not really getting the hype about Mr. Beal... I want to be impressed, really. I hope I am soon. Nice animation, though.
