I mean, it's still illegal in CA to smoke (weed OR tobacco) in any public place so this totally makes sense. Allowing it would be against the law still, no?
If you read this website regularly there HAS to be at least a few bands you like covered in it, even if you weren't a fan of the NYC rock revival. LCD Soundsystem? The Rapture? Vampire Weekend, TV on the Radio, Grizzly Bear or any of the other Brooklyn bands?
I love Kerouac but that is fucking ACCURATE
BOOOOOOOK CLUUUUUUBBB!!! YES!
I saw on instagram that she was rehearsing with an actual string quartet. Did they come out and perform with her or was it just a recording still?
I like Rostam a lot, and obviously this is one of the best songs ever, but it's just not a great choice for him. It doesn't necessarily require a gruff dylan-esque voice, but it does require a certain world-weariness that Batmanglij is decidedly lacking.
Me too! After hearing Honeybear I was totally invested in their relationship in a way I don't usually get invested in celebrity relationships. It seemed like he really understood the futility of modern love/relationships which kinda made me feel like maybe he had a shot at making it actually work. Like, if he understood all the pitfalls maybe he'd be able to avoid them. Hurts because when you really identify with an artist and then things end up fucked up for them it kinda seems inevitable that it'll happen to you too.
Treasure Island festival, which should return next year is consistently good. There's only two stages and they alternate so there's never more than one band playing at a time.
You've got The Killers, Portugal. The Man, St. Vincent, Kendrick Lamar, Anderson Paak, and Sza. If none of those bands sound interesting to you then I'm surprised you bother reading this site, let alone commenting. It's definitely a weak lineup, maybe the weakest I've ever seen, but there's gotta be ONE on there!
The problem here would be that it'd be impossible to get anywhere near close for any of the bands. If only one band plays at a time you're looking at putting this thing on in a stadium or arena, which almost always sucks unless you're in the first 20 rows. If you've got two bands playing at a time then you'll miss 50% of the bill. I suppose you could do a tour like this in a smaller venue but in order to make it worthwhile for the artists tickets would need to be crazy $$$. I know people complain about getting close at bigger festivals but honestly, I've found that if I take 2 minutes to plan out my day ahead of time I have no problem getting close enough to enjoy almost all of the bands I want to see.
Probably no one will see this since this post is a few days old at this point but does anyone know if she's not touring with a backing band at all this time around or was this just for TV? Trying to decide if I want to drop the money for tickets. I've seen her before and I know she's amazing but without a band... I may sit this one out.
I thought about it more and here's the thing. Their songs aren't terribly hook heavy so they don't grab you right away, what grabs you are the little moments where they drop a really poignant lyric right as the dynamics of the song are shifting dramatically. LIke in Cadmium when he sings "but if I just say what it is/the answers SUBLIMMMAAATTEE AWWAAYYYYYY..." or the opposite at the end of Old Friends when the drums fall out and it gets quiet and he hits you with "I should call my parents when I think of them/I should tell my friends when I love them" and you're all like "this song is ABOUT ME! GET OUT OF MY BRAIN PINEGROVE!" So once you learn where the good parts of the song are you start to anticipate those moments harder and it builds and builds and when they hit you're like FFFUUCCKKKKK YESSSSS!
I was shocked when I saw them at how young they seemed in contrast with their lyrics. Like, I don't get how someone with less life experience than me can be so much better at distilling complicated thoughts and feelings into a turn of phrase that just fucking nails it on the head.
YES. Why is every song of their's like this?
Cool to see so many Oakland bands coming up!
Saw Lomelda open for Pinegrove in SF a couple weeks ago. DAAAAAAAMN that girl can sing! Just really really beautiful songs and voice. Interesting personality too, she was obviously EXTREMELY nervous but also really funny. And she's a huge Warriors fan!
Everything about this makes me uncomfortable, but like, in a good way.
I kind of think of them all as songwriters FOR millenials though, even though they all qualify as Gen Xers. Grunge was gen x's thing. I know that's gonna rankle a lot of folks. Can't mention the word millenials without generating ire.
I was really hoping for a Petty cover in Berkeley. Instead we got "Tangled Up in Blue" so I guess I can't complain.
