I've never quite understood why people are ok with an album only being liked after a number of listens. Yes, having deeper layers revealed after the tenth listen keeps you hooked, and all the best songs definitely do that, but they ALSO bring you in that first time too. Saying "you've just gotta listen to it ten times, and then you'll start to like it" is like saying "the first couple times you get beat up it just hurts, but if you keep doing it you'll eventually enjoy it"
Animal Collective: So weird their music has an odor
Based on that comment, Im expecting AC to drop a three-hour think-piece that Rush Limbaugh believes to be an anti-Romney conspiracy Wait...after reading that back, I still can't put that past this band
I was going to argue with you. but i think your moustache wins all arguments. And most other things. In fact...let me check... yep, your moustache has just won the internet. Kudos
Am I the only one who would kill to hear "Red Mosquito" live?
Fair point, but to be honest being able to properly interpret a song (make it your own) is just as impressive as doing the song yourself. Good examples include Frank Sinatra, Elvis, Ella Fitzgerald, Michael Jackson. Usher will never be a brilliant songwriter by himself, but for making these songs his own, its a surprisingly impressive record
First DMB gets metaphorically pooped on, now people are taking to the streets over John Mayer? Eben mind explaining your issue with John?
I'm sure this would probably cause the apocalypse, but considering how Stereogum has been alive and kicking for most of the 00s, would you (the mythical writers at SG) consider doing a counterlist? You can recruit Scott, his DMB post obviously shows that he is completely immune to slander from the comments section
Do people just not acknowledge their first three albums?
Wait...NME is biased towards british bands?
I think you may have just won the internet...yep, results are in, you have definitely just won the internet
He was just mad that his Motto "rape and pillage the planet to line your own pockets regardless of the consequences to everyone else" didn't catch on quite as much as Y.O.L.O
Michael, with respect to your answer, it throws a lot of hate around without actually saying very much, so I wanted to give you the chance to elaborate somewhat. Since you didn't really do anything further, then I'll simply counter your first argument. I can't tell you that Dave Matthews has a good voice. I can, however, express my surprise that, as someone who as a Stereogum listener puts up with thousands of voices that are not the normal idea of good (see: Girls, Yuck, Beach House, Mountain Goats, Destroyer, etc. and keeping in mind that all the bands in this bracket are bands that I love), that Dave Matthews is the one that you cant stand. Personal preference, I suppose. As for the 'essentially elevator music', that sounds very similar to the argument that 'I cant listen to For Emma, Forever ago because it puts me to sleep', or 'All Radiohead songs are just weird noises, I hate it'. The elevator music argument tends to come from people who dont really listen to very much DMB. I'd recommend listening to So Right, Why I Am, or any of Dave's electric stuff if you feel that its too soft for you, but from your comments I doubt you'll take my word for it. If Dave is " glorified Christopher Cross-esque bilge, yacht rock for gen-Xers and gen-Yers", then Indie music is a group of kids who got beaten up in high school banding together to gush about sensitive, picked-on songwriters in a failed attempt to feel like they belong to some kind of crowd. Both of those sentences are flat-out untrue, and both come more from lashing out at a group you don't understand than from any sort of thought. As for 'smooth jazz that doesn't know its smooth jazz', all you've really said there is that you know nothing about smooth jazz. I'd be happy to show you some, that way even if you hate it you'll at least know what it is that you hate. To end my novel of a response, I just want to say that the whole point (I thought, at least) of these indie blogs is that people would listen to the music, and I mean REALLY listen to the music, before passing judgement on it. apparently that only applies to bands no one has heard of yet. I'm looking forward to ten years from now when people are having arguments over why Stereogum is still covering Bon Iver, because all of his fans are plaid-shirted wannabe authors that cried at the end of The Notebook. I hope someone stands up for them too
Its kind of depressing, as a massive DMB fan and lover of most of the stuff posted on Strereogum, to see that apparently I'm not considered welcome by most of these posters. Your dont have to like Dave Matthews, be it for the fans, his voice, or his music. That being said, a lot of these painfully douchey comments are far worse than anything I've heard come out of a Dave fan's mouth. Keep in mind that Indie fans are often maligned as those kids who will go to a concert of some band they claim to love, make snide remarks about how their last tour was better the entire show, then tell all their friends about how they went and how it was the BEST CONCERT EVER. Based on how you guys are treating both DMB and Scott for liking him, you're fast becoming a worse set of fans than the Dave Mathews Frat listeners. Also, Michael Hanna, I'd love to know what specifically has irked you about Dave Matthews. If you can, use songs. If you cant, just use concepts, but I'm legitmiately curious as to where the hate comes from
Also look at Johnny Greenwoods head still visible from behind Ed O Briens head
The music snob in me would much rather have the masses listening to Teen Dream than Teenage Dream.
I'm really hoping that Lana Del Rey will wind up being a Joaquin Phoenix-style hoax, and that she really makes fantastic music and isn't really the mainstream attempt to popularize 'indie'. I'm also hoping to find proof that Santa is real.
Wait, you check that kind of thing?
Probably for the best, Tom. As a Canadian its my job to hunt down the remaining Nickelback fans and 'explain' to them the error of their ways. We tried it with the Beliebers, but theres too damn many of em. Biebermania is like musical herpes, sometimes you worry like everyone has it
