my point being that if sufjan, vampire weekend, and like Grimes or someone all put out amazing albums, then wouldn't this article be kinda moot?
If the album is good, then it will have a place in the musical landscape of whatever year it comes out. I think you even hit this home with the point of most of these bands didnt have a lot in common to begin with. I'm always weary about trying to classify broad statements about a band not fitting in, because while not necessarily untrue, they give too much power to the "state of music". I think the honest truth is that while a lot of bands we used to love put out pretty good albums, none of them were that great. If they had been as good as the classics they released a decade ago, they would've demanded us find a place for them.
The single "the Castle" is a jam, and has a great video too. It's definitely their most accessible since Yoshimi, even if it's not beginning to end great.
I love Kool A.D. so much and think he is so under appreciated (His album the Natural this year had a ton of gems on it, with Papyrus being the best song he's made in a couple years imo), but I can't make it through his 100+ song albums. Are there any standouts that you recommend?
"If you go through history, almost everyone is guilty of sleeping with minors." is a sentence only someone who has slept with some minors would say...
All of the male-led bands we worship only care about #female_empowerment approximately never assuming they aren't outright sexually abusing women
That's kind of true but i think its important to consider that most of the "basic" women are most likely too busy doing dishes, folding laundry, or whatever housework is typically reserved for women instead of spending time on music blogs curating their tastes to whatever underground music isn't actively being marketed to them.
are you really denying that the term "basic" is derogatory and almost entirely aimed at women? (except in the instances it's being wielded by gay men)
I do not understand why you're getting downvoted for all this.... All seems pretty sensible and on the money to me...
I wish they would all drop it, but as far as album covers go this one is far superior to Taylor's
Not really trying to defend this song too much cuz it's pretty plain, but I'm pretty sure the lyrics are just things that are said to her. I think the "You're so cool it makes me hate you so much;" line is directed at her, not coming from her.
I actually really liked arcade fire's album art. It was everything else that was really terrible about that album!
I would like to add that I'm a big grizzly bear fan, with shields probably being my favorite. Ive just seen a ton of articles pontificating on this topic, and thought I'd add my two cents
I think the main appeal of indie music was that it was fringe but also, often inspite of itself, impressively good. I think the question is less how/where do our favorite indie bands belong in 2017, as much as how do we feel that the music they're making is no longer vital. And I feel like this is true of even the newer bands as well. I love Waxahatchee and Pinegrove, but they're neither musically or lyrically as ambitious as Bright Eyes and Modest Mouse were over a decade ago. So yeah basically i think it is a question that is still worth asking. The culture has changed, the artists have changed, and how does that effect our experience.
nothing wrong with questioning testimonies, but when you have a history of only challenging the default popular positions on topics like this a pattern develops. Just something to consider next time you're defending a man you don't know who has a picture taken of him with his hand clearly in the buttcrack vicinity, with two witnesses of him doing this.
that would not be a very funny segment
That dude's an idiot. As someone who loves conor oberst as well, I really enjoyed your story. It was fuckin intense. Thank you for sharing.
iTunes match solves basically all of these problems. Upload all of your music to the cloud as they are. They don't match them to the iTunes library the way apple music does. There might be a storage limit but it is incredibly high. I have access to literally all of my music on my phone.
