I'm just really saddened by all of this. The unlikeliness of an openly queer punk band like this succeeding to this point is staggering, so for this to happen at this moment in time is honestly tragic for all involved - especially their young queer/trans fans
Is it weird to be concerned about what kind of review Pitchfork gives them? Because I think their music still deserves to be heard. You have someone like Freddie Gibbs still getting rave reviews, so it's not like they're opposed to reviewing artists who are embroiled in controversy..
I'm going to quote VoilaNota here from another post when they said : "As some have already noted on Twitter, referring to Pwr Bttm as "allies" as that tweet did is some semantic tomfoolery. Both Ben and Liv are queer and clearly part of the LGBT community. Just because they may have done something bad does not mean they aren't queer. Please learn nuance, people "
For those who think Gaga didn't make a political statement - Mike Pence on site, millions of conservatives watching and she sang this.
"Rejoice and love yourself today / 'Cause baby, you were born this way
No matter gay, straight or bi / Lesbian, transgendered life
I'm on the right track, baby / I was born to survive
No matter black, white or beige / Chola or orient made
I'm on the right track, baby / I was born to be brave
" ✨
She also sang the opening to "This Land Is Your Land" but if you look up the full lyrics.. "In the shadow of the steeple I saw my people / By the relief office I seen my people / As they stood there hungry, I stood there asking / Is this land made for you and me?
Nobody living can ever stop me, / As I go walking that freedom highway / Nobody living can ever make me turn back / This land was made for you and me."
Yo I never know where to throw this but if anyone's interested in a download of all 100 of Pitchfork's best songs of 2016, here's my dropbox : https://www.dropbox.com/sh/ptyvxz3u8dzdlo3/AABYPx3p8d6mxZeib7z4f1jHa?dl=0
SERIOUSLY!!!
How can you have (the excellent) A Seat at the Table, without giving huge props to Blood Orange's Freetown Sound?! For me, Freetown Sound is a little more filled out, and even more powerful and gorgeous than Solange's masterpiece
Ugh I'm a wreck.
As a Canadian he's been part of my dad's Sunday listening habits for as long as I can remember. Such a treasure
Leonard Cohen was fond of saying
"I feel that more and more we're invited to make ourselves strong and cheerful. .... I think that it was Ben Jonson who said, I have studied all the theologies and all the philosophies, but cheerfulness keeps breaking through."
Im no optimist but maybe it will help you
Fun to see Kevin, Mark and Blood in a high budget music video
Still don't really know why that superfluous key change exists but hey! I'm still holding out for some better deep cuts off Joanne
in an alternate reality this might be a plausible crowd pleasing setlist :
The National Anthem
Burn the Witch / Lotus Flower
Idioteque
Creep / Karma Police medley
Sorry to be predictable but Low is an effing masterpiece
I still find it emotionally staggering that Bowie winked back at "New Career in a New Town" on his last song on his last album
I can't give everything away indeed
I've seen all of the footage and I honestly don't believe these were bad shows - like if Manson fucked with the sound guy and fell off the stage i'd consider it a huge treat
I might be just reading surface level but to me it's the work of the patriarchy who spends billions razing the land to suit their infinite demands, whether it's blood diamonds or the tar sands - this is the work of a system that's threatening the very survival of the human race
Despite the fact that Grimes created the best pop album angel music bb of all time, I feel like either Jessy Lanza, Kantranada, or U.S. Girls could do more with that prize money
Proud to be Canadian this year esp
Wow.
This is exquisite. I don't suppose we know if it's Alejandro singing or not? My guess is not, he's more of a producer/wizard behind the boards but.. imagine if it was
Also. Such a babe *swoon* - very excited for this new record
Ugh. Plus consider all of the news she's being bombarded with - the Orando shootings, Christina GRIMMIE etc. as if touring isn't anxiety ridden enough
I hope she's okay
Deerhunter reconvened for Bradford Cox's supposed "solo" set on Sunday afternoon in the heart of Barcelona aaaand finished the set wiiiith... "NOTHING EVER HAPPENED" !!
Gah! What. A. Show.
The new song had a bit of a Boards of Canada feel
Kind of a cliché but it's definitely the closest music has ever brought me to a spiritual experience, to a place without fear, without doubt, only pure fucking universal love. Plus, Jonsi tearing his guitar e-bow to shreds while unleashing waves of glorious feedback is pretty punk rawk if you ask me
