My top 10 to date (have not yet heard Disclosure, BOC or Sunbather): Vampire Weekend, mbv, Daft Punk, Kurt Vile, National, Nick Cave, Dirty Beaches, Deerhunter, Koze, Savages.
The only interesting thing here is who the author believes are the other 4 greatest drummers in the history of rock. That statement is made with great confidence and no hyperlink. Don't disagree, just curious.
To me there is no question that Vespertine is her greatest album, by some margin. I've never understood why that isn't a more prevalent view. That album is awe-inspiring, and in a totally different category from the rest of her stuff, even classics like Homogenic and Post.
Substance is undoubtedly the best starting place. To be followed by Technique and PC&L. But all their studio records prior to Republic are essential (the rest are great as well, but the classics end with Technique).
Technique is, song for song, NO's strongest record (in terms of overall experience, its a toss-up between that and PC&L). However I agree with the author that no single song ranks in the top 10.
Not ranking Ceremony in NO's top 10 is outside the bounds of reasonable "personal preference". Raises judgment issues. Its really not even close. This is the overwhelming consensus view of all informed NO obsessives.
Good list for the most part. The glaring problem is the omission of Ceremony, which is not only the greatest New Order song, but one of if not the greatest song ever. I'd kill Crystal - not even close to the top 10 - and personally think Blue Monday is overrated (although hard to quibble with its historical importance). The rest are all legitimate contenders, although I would find room for Your Silent Face and We All Stand. Very psyched to see Elegia on here.
Agree, this is a joke without Heroin, frankly in the #1 spot. Its one of the greatest songs ever. VU has so many great songs that there is plenty of room for legit disagreement, but not about Heroin. And while Sister Ray is a fascinating tune, sorry, its not #1.
Um, yes. Let It Be is like #1 by a long shot, I thought that was universally understood. Tim is great but a distant second. Pleased to meet me also a great record, but not even in the same league. The rest not worth being on the same list (although "Kids Don't Follow" is a killer tune)
These lists are usually pretty good but this one is all fucked up. Document as number 1? Murmur as #4? Here is the correct order of REM albums.

So cheers for this and why does it take fucking Tegan & Sarah to speak out against this nonsense while SG, P4K and the rest of the indie music press busies themselves with their "think pieces" (I don't think I've yet read a review or write-up of Goblin that doesn't refer to all the "think pieces" Odd Future has been generating - can't help envisioning the send-up of Ben Fong-Torres from Almost Famous). This is not causal, look the other way type stuff. This is vile, serious, anti-social shit and there is nothing more interesting about it than that. A significant portion of the problems in this country and our public discourse can be summed up by the fact that there is anything for anyone to even "think" about here.
