though I might want to change my album choice if Scott Walker or Big Boi blow my mind in December. hopefully they don't get too overlooked for coming out so late in the year.
my votes:
Album: Swans - The Seer
Song: Future - Same Damn Time
and some other stuff, including a vote for Game of Thrones in the TV show category.
speaking of The Seer, I finally got the money together and bought the 2CD/DVD Edition and to my surprise, Michael Gira actually signed it on the back, which is fucking awesome. Excited to check out the bonus DVD.
yeah, it's sort of weird to see The Seer that low on the list. Either keep it off and say you're sticking to metal or move up to where it belongs. Converge and Baroness are solid choices at #1 and #2. I really liked the new Blut Aus Nord album, I'd probably put that one even higher than they already have. I haven't really heard a majority of the stuff on here, since this was basically the first year I actually got into metal, but now I have a whole list of albums to check out!
I've been mentioning that you guys should do this for months and now it's here! I might put Filth a little higher, but I Agree on the Seer and Children of God being the top 2.
wow, just realized that both Adele and Taylor Swift aren't actually signed to major labels. XL must've raked in a lot of money off of that Adele album.
Yeah, Epic didn't want to release it until next year. Honestly, I think they messed up on this one if they decided to go out and offer a contract to Death Grips, without expecting some ridiculous form of rebellion if Epic started meddling with their music.
Manages to blow me away without including Cartoons & Cereal, which is still my favorite Kendrick song. Maybe gunplay can throw it on his album. It would be awesome if gunplay made some more songs with that direction.
Tom, two months ago in this column, you started off with a seemingly irrelevant paragraph comparing Godspeed and Neurosis live, and now here we are, and they've each dropped an amazing and unexpected album on our ears. Maybe this is some new power you have? Want to try starting off next week's album of the week with a paragraph on My Bloody Valentine and OutKast?
Yes, Yes, and Yes. I can Hear the Heart Beating as One is actually one of my favorite albums. the entire first half is just perfect, and all the crazy excursions on the other side are just another part of what makes it awesome.
trespasses has got to be one of the most destructive songs I've ever heard. I'm probably going to see them live with torche in a few weeks, should be amazing.
I think the week that Don't Bend! Ascend! comes out will be the one week this month without a tough decision being made. Stereogum should start doing some more premature evaluations to make it easier on Tom.
I don't know where to start with because I can't figure out where the hell the Seer goes as far as genre at all. it feels like a musical world of it's own like any great album should. I love how it combines those crazy intense peaks of heaviness and free-jazz squalls with moments of beauty like Song for a Warrior or quiet and ominous bits like The Wolf. I also think the instrumentation is awesome, with all these crazy instruments like bagpipes and church bells actually contributing a lot to the songs.
given Shields a few more listens and I have to say it's growing on me. maybe in a month I might call it equal or better to the Seer (though honestly lists are fucking stupid and when you have two albums of that quality you can't really put one over the other). then again, in a month another album could come along and blow my mind just as much as these two are. this has been a damn good year for music, and it looks like the music won't be slowing down any time soon.
