This reminds me of another controversy from a book called Intern Nation, built around the use of unpaid interns in industry. The basic gist is, it's exploitative (and probably should be illegal) to use people as part/full-time employees but to classify them in a category where they get no compensation, benefits, etc. Coming from someone who worked with the Occupy Movement as she has, this kind of shocks me -- she should know better. Her excuse that she's done the same rings true of most business owners today who use interns, because they themselves were once interns. That doesn't make the position right. It's still an exploitative practice to ask a group of people to take no compensation for the work they're doing when you're in a position to compensate them, especially when you raised as much money as she did. It's a lazy and/or naive attitude to say, "Well, I got mine and succeeded, so I don't have to worry about them." You're in a position to legitimately help people and your response is "I'm not interested in theory, just the reality."? Seriously? Just because they're happy doesn't mean they aren't being exploited.
Also, putting up your opener in your bus isn't the same thing as not paying the people who perform with you in Vancouver, or wherever; it's even worse when you admit you're stacking cities based on importance, so New York gets some paid players while other tour locations don't. What does that say to the players in the lesser cities? "You're not as important as New York, sorry." The fact that she hides behind the idea that she's "from another culture" as an out from this argument is probably what bothers me the most.
Honestly, the only 3 Sonic Youth albums that even register to me are Bad Moon Rising, because of my penchant for death rock, Evol, and Daydream Nation. Of those, Evol is far and away the best. I know Daydream is the "landmark achievement" or whatevs, but Evol just sounds better to me.
Are you people new to Morrissey? The man has opinions and they're never pleasant.
But he would've been better off drawing a stronger parallel to Greece and making note of the fact that the Olympics tends to bankrupt almost every city that hosts it. It's a fucking sad excuse for pomp and circumstance that it is rife with corruption. Look up how Salt Lake City lost out to Nagano, and then look up what they did to host the winter Olympics after that. Also the tendency of host cities to make their homeless populations "disappear" during the games. Seriously though, fuck the Olympics.
Nothing as catchy? Have you people heard "Baby" yet? Granted, it's a cover, but that's the closest I think Ariel will ever come to recording a radio-friendly song.
It doesn't matter what the writers of this site think of her. She generates hits for this site. This blog is part of a larger media company, BUZZmedia. Hits equal ad revenue. I'd venture to guess there's a "suggestion" of some sort from up on high to continue focusing on Lana.
Believe me, I wish they'd cover her less too.
She's newsworthy and coverage of her generates hits. So she gets covered by music blogs. A writer for a blog may not like her, so he inserts his own opinion. This is the way the Internet works. Is it really that hard to understand?
Rock N Roll is the only Adams album I connected with. I generally dislike alt-country since I find most of it boring, Adams included. The genre deconstruction he was doing on Rock N Roll just seemed more interesting, and the songs were fun in a winking at the audience sort of way. Yeah, you can see the reference points he's taking shots at in the Strokes with the opening track and Interpol on "So Alive", and yes they were easy targets at the time, but the songs aren't nearly as bad as people keep claiming.
