well, it's a criticism that all three members of Nirvana have leveled at themselves. if it's lazy it's shared by the band. and they're also not talking about the bands sounding just like each other, they're talking about the structures of the songs. the whole quiet LOUD quiet thing was established as a classic Pixies song structure, and everyone said that back then. but to criticize Nirvana for going to that well, that's prob the lazy part about it. every band after Surfer Rosa came out started doing that. hell Bob Mould started doing that after that album came out. that's more what they're talking about. but that's not ripping off another band, that's called being influenced by them, which are two totally different things.
Honestly that Metallica album is what killed glam metal. It was already not popular by the late 80's. Everyone was not feeling that Reagan economy and seeing all of those guys spending millions partying was not rubbing the right way.
The story is that Kurt said he knew they'd gotten big when Weird Al did that song. Not bonking Michael Jackson off the #1 charts, but the Weird Al parody.
I do remember buying the CD and then me and two other friends sitting down and thinking in the beginning "This is weird, this sounds a little lame maybe"....then Exactly Where I'm At kicked in with the mega-drums and fuzzed guitar and we knew instantly it would be alright. Saw them in Charleston later that year and it's still maybe my favorite Ween show I've seen. Fuckin' a, great times with that band.
I live here in ATX. He did an AMA on the Austin sub one time on Reddit, and I asked him how he felt about the GnR reunion going on without him. He never responded.
