I agree that is is bad for the music industry, but I don't think the Gaye Family is to blame here. They didn't sue Pharrel and Thicke; they counter-sued only after Thicke sued them to protect his moneys after he said in interviews that Blurred Lines was inspired by Got To Give It Up. Thicke started this whole mess. The Gaye family doesn't even own the full rights of Gaye's music. They've been screwed out of royalties by MG's old publishing company, and now here comes Growing Pains suing them after he said he wanted to make a song like Got To Give it Up.
I've never really been into Girl Talk as an artist. I saw him on a documentary about copyright issues, talking about how remixing and sampling is a way to create art out of art, and I agree with that, except, he's probably the worst example of that. Every time I listen to his music I feel like I just watched one of those "Another ____ Movies", where it's just references with no narrative. I guess he has good music taste and he's found a way to market that, so good for him.
There's a lot of festivals around nowadays. so I feel people take for granted how SXSW was one of the first places where you could see a very diverse gathering of artists in one region. I would've be surprised if one day you hear "Deep from the slums of Ohama comes the Pnut, the Nix Hex, the Chad sexton and me, the M E T H O D man"
