I want to win the top ten on vinyl, but Stereogum isn't letting me log in to my Facebook account! Anyway, as far as stuff that's on my list that's missing here, I think I'd probably throw in the Tree mixtape and Alpoko Don's Ol' Soul EP. Young Thug's tape is growing on me too, and After Dark 2 will probably get there in a few more listens. It's been weird though, I've liked a lot of albums this year, but I've been spending so much of my music time discovering old music that I haven't really gotten obsessed over any new music like I did with The Seer last year. I'm sure that'll start changing soon though.
On one of the images of the cover, it said "Graffiti This" over the image, so you're totally allowed to write "praise Yeezus" in big red sharpie on top of the CD.
I'm a sucker for anything that combines that sort of bleak Americana with Metal or Heavy music (Swans, Horseback, the later Earth stuff), so this Man's Gin track is pretty great for me. I haven't heard any of this guy's music with Cobalt or in this band, I guess I should check that out.
woah, highest rated comment had only seven upvotes?
Apparently the album cover is the way it is because it's the color you see with your eyes closed at the park looking up at the sun.
One of the shows has Earth opening up for Godspeed. I don't know if I'll get the whole festival ticket, but that is one show I will definitely be trying to go to.
I was walking through the park while listening to this and the sun was peeking out through the clouds and it felt amazing. I think that the black metal vocals work really well in this somehow, even though it feels slightly out of place, the screams over this sort of music just feel ecstatic, rather than the pained, hateful screams that work on darker Black Metal albums. But yeah the build-ups on this album makes me wish I could just takeoff and fly up above the clouds.
Seriously though, If anyone reading this article hasn't listened to Soul Food and Still Standing, they need to get on that. Two absolute classic rap albums.
I agree about that, but it feels to me like this song is the sound of Kanye moving away from the fashion rap, stripping down the beat into this sparse sort of sound (which is good because his beats have gotten way too busy over the past few years), and just ranting about all of the bullshit that pisses him off.
Can we talk about how Tim Dog might be the real version of the rapper-faking-his-death conspiracy theory that always happens? If it's actually true and faked his death so he wouldn't have to pay all those people he apparently scammed on dating sites, this is so awesome.
I was at this show! It was pretty great.
Bye daddy. I will stunt in your honor while you are gone.
Spot on about the Chicagoness of it. I really like that he manages to blend together all these different influences from his city in a way that makes them new and fresh.
Agreed. Especially since most of the artists don't care at all, yet the fans who worship them are so set on this "real rap" binary while Chance shouts out Chief Keef and Kendrick praises Juvenile and collabs with Gunplay. It's just some bullshit for people on the Internet to argue about.
Twista! For some reason I feel like Chance is a combo of the Kanye side of Chicago Rap with the awesome Do or Die/Twista style of rappers.
I'm on that FreeBandz Free Love, so I forgive you, my hater.
Maybe they can add a "Postmature Evaluation".
"They don't call me the Future for no reason"
He's definitely improved a ton from the goofy high pitched hooks on Shake Ya Ass and all those tracks.
It took them this long to get Randy Newman? What the hell happened there?
Yeah, if they were going to pick a mixtape DJ to host this song, they should've at least picked DJ Holiday or something. He would've just added extra screams and gunshot noises everywhere, instead of this lame MMG imitation of a DJ Drop.
D'Angelo? Shit, I might go just to see that.
Never really listened to this guys songs before, but on first listen, this is pretty great.
Yeah, this almost like those "trailers for the trailer", since this is all stuff for one single. I really want them to just come out with the single already so I can get the whole thing stuck in my head instead of little snippets.
goddamnit can I just get the song instead of teasing us like this?
Speaking of Unknown Mortal Orchestra, I was never that into the band but I saw a free show of theirs this weekend with a few friends and they really impressed me. I had a great time, and that drummer especially was incredible. Of course they got a bit overshadowed because the day after I got to see Jeff Mangum, which was the greatest sing-a-long session I've been to since I was a small child.
I never really got into this guy's music, but I guess this is probably a good time to give it another shot.
James Blake seems to be getting a lot of love from southern rap producers. First Big K.R.I.T. is sampling him, and now Mike Will Made It is all tweeting about how he wants to work with him. And I guess Drake cited him as an inspiration too. Could be interesting if the RZA track becomes a first step on a route towards getting involved with hip-hop.
Mute is a pretty successful label itself, it has a few pretty popular artists on there. I just think that the Knife right now has a pretty large audience amongst music geeks, etc. and I don't see it getting into the mainstream or anything because that's not something that they're aiming for nor is their music the type of stuff that would capture a pop audience at this point.
I wish there were more music geeks for sure, I'd love to just be able to talk with strangers about The Knife or my recent Dungeon Family obsession. It's definitely easier to become one than ever before, with the increasing availability of music and all these different sites and blogs to choose from. But it's still something that consumes a lot of time. (And hard drive space!). I just think this album especially is one that is more designed for those who are already music nerds, rather than one that can serve as a "gateway drug". Being challenged is good, but I feel like usually there's a certain way to sort of ease into the style of music so you "get it" and don't just feel disoriented and confused.
Thanks, Michael and Wyatt. Just got Live to Tell from the website, and I'm really liking this so far.
As much as I love the Knife, I don't really think they've got a missing segment of music fans that would get into this music but haven't because of lack of publicity or whatever. This album especially isn't what I would call accessible for most people. There are other artists where I feel that argument is more valid, unless everyone on earth magically started liking weirder music.
What would you say is a good starting point for this guy's music?
YES. I'm excited to sink into this one, especially once it starts raining again.
I hope Baroness decide to hit the west coast soon. Glad that they're back.
VW= Vampire Weekend VW= Volkswagen so, Vampire Weekend = Volkswagen
There was an excellent article in the Willamette Week about the Exploding Hearts and talking to the only surviving member. http://www.wweek.com/portland/article-20441-exploding_hearts_4ever.html
Or they have the same initials.
