Don't sleep on UNKNOWN ME, one of the best tracks on it is a foodman collaboration! A Softer Focus was really high on my general list, but I guess I leaned more into dance music when putting together this one.
I think the KMRU release was a compilation of previous releases? He's put out so many good releases this year on his Bandcamp, sometimes just one or two tracks and always worth hearing.
Double Cup is incredible! I was referring to Rashad's Just A Taste Vol. 1 which just had its 10 year anniversary this year and has some of his all-time best tracks https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j73kjy-JOaU This was the best year for footwork I can remember in so long. Between Jana Rush, RP Boo, DJ Manny and Jlin, Planet Mu just knocked it out of the park all year.
Eccojams is incredible! Have you ever heard Mediafired's Pathway Through Whatever? It was released on the label Beer On The Rug around the same time as their original cassette of Floral Shoppe and does eccojams so well. The Kate Bush and Backstreet Boys tracks are all-time favorites. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=guZueuki4-Q
Wow I think that might have been during CMJ?! I remember Robert A. A. Lowe opening too which is cool because he's doing the score to Nia Dacosta's Candyman sequel this year.
That's a great list! I think you might like Kamixlo's album on PAN that came out in November. E.M.M.A.'s album is incredible and was on a few versions of this top 10 I worked out. And since you mention Call Super, I hope you check out Parris (#4) if you haven't! Last year they did "Chiseler's Rush" (https://canyoufeelthesun.bandcamp.com/album/canufeelthesunonyrback) which was one of my favorite singles of the year. And they JUST put out a collaborative EP last week which missed being on here.
Great list! The first DJ Python album, Dulce Compania, was one of my very favorite albums of 2017 and really the whole decade. Deep house + reggaeton does not sound like a winning combo on paper, but that album sounded like absolutely nothing in club music and I think it'll end up being a really influential sound. Mas Amable is great and I will always ride for an absurdly long, single-track album, but I guess I was just sliiiightly disappointed because, again, Dulce Compania is a genuinely perfect album.
I enjoyed all three of your comments. And your taste isn't pedestrian! Just like what you like! Taste is the mindkiller
I need to check out the Darkside live album. I was lucky enough to see one of the very last Darkside shows covering FYF Fest for Stereogum in 2014. It was actually the one where they destroyed the giant mirror they used at all the shows. I loved Psychic so much, which is funny because I've disliked nearly everything Nicolas Jaar has made before or since. Dave Harrington's stuff is less frequent, but is usually really interesting.
I think your list is great! Speaking of veteran electronic artists putting out their best work in years, the Robert Hood and Oval albums were incredible. The Eartheater album was my favorite by far, even with how excellent her earlier albums are. Also! I don't know if you're a horror movie fan, but Roly Porter actually did his first horror movie score this year with The Beach House. I thought the movie was just alright, but the score is really cool.
