Like the article says, this is hardly surprising if you look at the Billboard charts, I mean whatever's a number one in the album chart practically screams "NOBODY BUYS RECORDS ANYMORE!" every week. "Weird Al gets first Billboard number one" "Guardians of the Galaxy's Aweseom Mixtape Volume 1 first soundtrack to debut at number one since *certain frame of time*" "There's a Christian music album at number one today" I mean it's a similar situation here in Britain, a few months ago Lana Del Rey only needed 48,000 album sales to get to number 1 here. But it's still not as bad as in the US. It's only taking about 120-140k sales to top the Billboard 200 which is only about one and a half times what it typically takes to get to number 1 in Britain. It's pretty bad when you consider the US has a population about six times that of ours.
Everyone on the comment party seemed to be all "yay Panda Bear killed it" but I can't for the life of me remember any of his vocals in that song. I've got the "Doin' it right, everybody will be dancing and be doin' it right..." etc stuck in my head though
Agreed with the concensus here that You Wanted A Hit is placed too high. I'd have Yeah (Crass Version) in its place. Also, no love for Movement? I was at a show on LCD's final UK tour and when they played that song everyone just lost their shit and danced like no-one was watching (myself included)
I'd have Us Vs Them on this list too, I've never heard it talked about in the same breath as, say Losing My Edge, but I love it with a passion. Everytime they reach the final chorus, in my head I'm doing some Village People type dance, except instead of "Y M C A" I'm spelling "U V T"
Aw, he even did the Katie Pierson "ba-ba-ba-ba baaa-baaaaah"'s too (well, at the second time of asking). Does anyone know what other R.E.M. song's they did?
You know the old cliche "I could listen to that person sing the phone book"? Well I could (and just did) listen to Cat Power singing the alphabet and nursery rhymes all day.
While I seriously hope this gets a proper release, I'm at least glad that this song isn't spearheading a release of "Devotion: Deluxe Edition" like I've seen happen with far too many other acts not long after their album gets released.
This has classic Stones written all over it: pretty solid riff, Jagger sounding better than any 69 year old has a right to sound, and as an added bonus Noomi gets her Ya Ya's out!
I thought 'Dre's guest spots this year have been pretty great - on Gorillaz' DoYaThing, Frank Ocean's Pink Matter. Hell, he almost made that Dedication To My Ex song passable (although I might be biased on that one because seeing a cat spit 'Dre's verses in the video is pretty hilarious). Big Boi's stuff is sounding great too, Vicious Lies... sounds like it could live up to the standards he set on Lucius Leftfoot. These two things combined makes me a bit sad they can't just get their shit together and make another Outkast record. in a way I'm kind of glad 'Dre's not doing any guest spots on Vicious Lies... because then I'd be left wondering "...well if you can hook up for this, why not do another Outkast record?"
Speaking of the Mercury Prize, the list of nominees gets revealed today. Alt-J have got to be considered shoe-ins to be nominated. (Django Django are surely in with a chance of getting nominated too). As a PhD student studying maths they've forever won a place in my heart for writing "Tesselate". I've yet to find the courage to use it as a picking line though...
No love for "Tender?" One of the best festival singalongs of their generation. Also I hope the band aren't considering calling it a day as seriously as they claim to be, "Under The Westway" is brilliant.
Hey yeah, what's the deal with that? You don't include tracks from 1980 in a best of 70s list. And yeah I don't get Foals either.
Also how is this list "Brit heavy"? Every time I see two consecutive places taken up by Brits the next three places at least get taken up by non-Brits!
Top 5 Stereogum comments complaining about lists: 5. I got to [insert number] and had to stop, couldn't stop laughing! 4. [Generic smart alec comment parodying people who go "Such a person's listed above such a person? Rabble rabble rabble!"] 3. Lists are irrelevent. 2. Where the hell are 311? Man, they got screwed out of this one. 1. Whhere the hell is Bon Iver? Man, he got screwed out of this one.
Wow, only record on this list I've hear in full is the Beach House album, and I've just tried listening to the number 1 on this list and found it to be not to my taste at all. I must be lame huh?
Yeah I'm not taken with this song either, Wrecking Ball has much stronger songs than this. Last time I cringed at a song on a Springsteen album this much was Skin To Skin on The Rising. I don't get why Bruce chooses to highlight this so much over some of the others - it was his Record Store Day release and it's in virtually every set of his tour so far. I'd much prefer him to have something like We Are Alive as a single.
