I looked at the cast list, they've got Sam Cooke and Ella Fitzgerald, but I don't see anyone playing Otis Redding. Based on the trailer it almost seems like they're making it look like Aretha wrote "Respect." It is most definitely her song, but can they at least acknowledge that Otis wrote it?
Quite possibly! Though at the time I was an extraordinarly awkward teenager who barely spoke to anyone.
I grew up in the same area of Massachusetts as Sean. Used to go watch his high school/college band, Daniel Striped Tiger, play shows in basements and various teens centers. I remember when my friend told me that Sean Y was in a well known band. Still completely bizarre to me to this day that a dude I used to watch play in basements is now kind of famous? Mostly because one of my most clear memories is of my friend pantsing Sean at the county fair (where DST had played earlier). Anyway, good on him and the rest of the band.
Florence is just a force live. I've seen her twice and both times was just blown away. The first time was a few days after the Pulse nightclub. She had a moment of silence then brought out a pride flag and danced around the stage with it trailing behind her (I believe the song was "Shake it Out"). It was cathartic. Her albums can be over the top, but I love them all.
Fences sort of fell flat as movie adaptation for me, but this looks like it has a bit more life. Here for any and all August Wilson.
You put it into words better, the transition between "I want to be well" and "impossible soul" really is comforting. Which is why I hate that the vinyl put the end of "Impossible Soul" after "I want to Be Well." Doesn't hit as hard.
The beginning of the title track always reminded me of an old-school Disney score (Sleeping Beauty, mostly), in the best possible way.
He did Impossible Soul at Pitchfork, but it was during the Carrie and Lowell era. The rest of the set had been sparse, playing some classics at the end. Then he just exploded with Impossible Soul, costumes and all, and it was such a joy to watch.
I was in my last year of college when this came out. Pretty sure I bought it on CD. The first listen happened while I was working a lonely shift in my university's wood shop. Impossible Soul came on as I swept up sawdust. It was kind of the perfect way to digest it. I remember hating the auto-tune, but loving the rest of the song, now I love all of it. To exemplify the divide the album caused: three of us roommates in a car, all Sufjan fans. Album played through at least twice in the drive somewhere. Finally, one roommate had to demand we change it. The other two of us were fully prepared to listen to the album 10 more times. I am forever salty that vinyl of Adz splits Impossible Soul and places the acoustic ending right after "I Want to Be Well." It just ruins it. Finally, have to point out that costumes and choreographed dance moves were part of Sufjan's Illinois shtick (and his Christmas tour). The Age of Adz tour shouldn't wasn't really out of left field, you could almost argue that his stripped-down Carrie and Lowell tour wasn't very Sufjan.
My dude was supposed to be visiting family this weekend but got a scratchy throat. We did a drive-thru test and are waiting on the results. I was really looking forward to a weekend alone (the first since covid). Instead I’ll be holed up in my office listening to Sufjan. I have yet to dislike a Sufjan album, but we’ll see.
What’s weird is if you go back to the early columns there are barely any comments. I miss it.
I started reading stereogum/videogum in college over 10 years ago. Eek.
"My God" is my favorite so far. I was listening to this album in the car on the way to pick up my partner. I played that song 4 times, since I knew my dude wouldn't want to listen to the Killers when he got in the car. It's just such a fun anthem.
Back in the day Phantom Planet fans HATED Rooney fans. It was kind of hilarious?
Same. My reaction was "you mean Phantom Planet"?
I know it's the wrong song, but no mention of the Culture Club bit in the Wedding Singer? One of the funniest parts of that movie.
I read the title and didn’t even have to look at the author to know who it was. Hi Kelly! I have no plans to spend $100 on cbd, but now I’m in a Sigur Ros mood.
First reaction was excitement, second reaction "Holy crap, Carrie and Lowell is five years old."
Late to this party, but very excited for this Friday listening. My pop-hating partner is at work all day, so all the speakers are blasting CRJ all day.
A friend of mine made it on Jeopardy last year. Good luck! And practice hitting the buzzer, she said that was the toughest part with all the weird timing (can’t hit it until Alex is done, get a delay if you hit it too early).
