An album released for streaming in no way necessitates you opening an article with a personal story of being 16. Take it as a tip that almost nothing, other than an article about when you were 16, necessitates you opening an article with a personal story of being 16.
I don't think there's any disputing there's a passing resemblence to [Wangdoodle] Jenner.
Gosh I'm sorry but this is super lame and pretty pandering and very lowest-common denominator.
LOL at "well written." Ariel Pink Albums from Least Essential to Most Forgettable
Oh, that detail didn't fit into the "piece" but plenty of room for the perfectly irrelevant parenthetical "(I saw their set, but I don’t remember anything about it, possibly because I was preoccupied with the urgent need to get high before Cypress Hill came on.)"
If you're going to make a pointless list, the least you could do is write about it well.
It really is circlejerks all the way down huh?
This guy went and got himself some thumbs down, but he's 100% accurate. David Pogue has been a shameless slobberer on Apple for years, going to his stint with the New York Times. He'll without fail praise whatever new Apple thing is and poo-poo is competition. And it's a shite state of affairs, this ignorant mindset of "I'll take whatever cheap crap is easiest." " If you’re on-the-go, at what point does it matter how high-quality the audio is?" is the sentence of someone who has literally no idea what they're talking about. Finally, I did a little work for Pono (not on the product itself). But I ain't buying one. I'm sick of this fake shit.
This is a great read. Stereogum, you should try to do interviews that are good ones like this!
"“Band Practice Theme Song” is one of those runaway-train songs, steadily picking up steam until they’re playing so fast and furious that the only thing holding the song together is the sheer force of urgency. The drums are battered and bruised, the voices are triumphantly bleary and barely in sync, and the guitar eventually spirals into a simplistic little melody that’s both clumsy and completely brilliant. You can almost hear former solo artist Wall willing a band into existence around her, and it’s a good thing she did." This is pitiful writing. "Drums are battered and bruised?" "Voices are triumphantly bleary?" "Clumsy and completely brilliant?" "... willing a band into existence around her?" Not only is it weak and purple and painfully abstract, but even giving the benefit of the doubt the writer is doing their best to make some sort of point, none of these things are even really close to describing the song, which is just fine. The song is just fine. It's a fine poppy garage rock song played a billion times times for 75 years. This is the writing of someone who has no command of their art form, and no understanding of the art form their writing about.
This is embarrassing.
Jesus H. where does the "evaluation" part start? It's fine to reference the backstory for some context, but give me a break with an in-depth analysis of the band's history. Do you even know what you're trying to do here?
I didn't know videogum closed but I bet it's this asshole's fault.
Very good music journalism!
What a fascinating, relevant, and highly necessary list to put out into the world.
Will the albums Pearl Jam recorded after Vitalogy also turn 20? Stereogum will be on the scene to bloviate!
"Jessie Ware’s slow-burning soul ballad “Say You Love Me” is both my favorite song on her very good sophomore album Tough Love and one of my favorite songs of the year."!!!!
