It's not quite right that Bowie's catalog sold for half the value of Springsteen's. This Bowie deal at $250M looks to be for publishing rights only, where the Springsteen deal at $550M was for publishing AND recording rights. So accounting for the 2 different types of copyright, the publishing catalogs are valued pretty similarly at around $250M.
Hmm I'm doing fine, but it's not like having massive income is a prerequisite for record collecting. People who are not rich have been doing it for decades!
Hey, this is me! I buy vinyl from time to time and don't have a record player (I did not buy Adele though). I stream all my music these days, but buying records is my way of sending some extra love to the artists I adore. I recently bought some small shelves to display the records on my wall and I think it looks cool.
There is No Enemy felt so underrated for so long, but I love that a lot of fans have come around and recognize the brilliance of that one. My vote for most underrated album now goes to Untethered Moon... so many great jams on that one! Any new Built to Spill album is big event for me. Also... one time I saw Doug eating pizza before a show in NYC and I said hi. I hope that wasn't too uncomfortable for him. I'm always nervous to approach celebs in real life (maybe it's a stretch to call Doug a "celebrity" but he is legit one of my heroes)
I adore this band and I agree. This is probably my least favorite album in the discography, but it's probably been a solid decade or so since I gave it a front to back listen. I'm due! Despite that though, "Strange" is like a top 5 song for the band. It's just the greatest.
Man, listening to those SS2K demos makes me so sad for the third Weezer album that could have been. Green is just OK to me. It's a completely unambitious album with a handful of immaculate pop tunes. I wish it had more variety and more energy, like you can hear in the SS2K demos.
Noooo, this one really hurts! Rough Trade was my favorite record store in NYC... what else is even left at this point? The back venue was great also. Some some fantastic, intimate shows there including a Luna reunion tour a few years back.
Love it! Lou's holiday attire made me chuckle. His lockdown performances and home concerts have been great.
Agreed, the album as a whole is a slog, but this song in particular stands out to me. I kinda like it. I'm sure there are some other ones worth picking out.
In the End is my #1 karaoke song. It's always a hit with people of a certain generation.
I am devastated. Album is undoubtedly one of my favorite albums of the last 15 years, and sooooo much of that sound is due to JR's influence. Like so many people I'm sure, I was always hoping the band would get back together and I could finally catch them live.
Surrender Your Poppy Field is possibly the best GBV album since 2004
There are so many different compilations, but yeah, there are definitely some great b-sides and demos out there. This one is my favorite La's song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Wl5vW8ogPw
I had a fan interaction with Michael on the streets on NYC in 2016. I approached him, said I was a big fan, and thanked him for his work. He was nice enough, but I kept the interaction pretty short. He thanked me and then told me to vote for Bernie Sanders :)
I'm loving all the REM love here. I saw them at MSG on the Accelerate tour back when I was an impressionable college kid, and to this day it remains one of my fondest concert experiences. Supernatural Superserious is a great song pick and this is a very touching tribute by Mark to his late husband Don.
Number of units moved and dollars spent are both valuable metrics. At the end of the day though, dollar amount and revenue is what determines the size of an industry.
I forgot until recently how much I liked the Decemberists. I've been jamming to some of their early records during my quarantine. This track is really nice. Would have fit right in on The King Is Dead.
I know Ben wrote this song and all, but it amuses me to see him do an acoustic rendition of Such Great Heights. I can't help but associate this with Iron and Wine. It feels like Ben is covering Iron and Wine's cover of the Postal Service, haha.
I generally agree, but I do really like Sukierae and the 2018 solo album Warm. Warm didn't break any new ground for Tweedy, but just felt like a strong collection of songs with a message and a purpose.
Could be! There were also some bigger ones like Frank Ocean and David Bowie, which probably don't come cheap.
