Dark spring and drunk in LA are as good as Myth
I honestly don’t understand why it’s not a 10.0. this is the greatest achievement of one of the greatest bands of all time. How could it get better than this for them? At least pull a “return of the king” Oscars and somehow recognize this band for an unparalleled body of work. This album had the right amount of press lead up to get p4k foaming at the mouth; expert single delivery while leaving all these songs remaining to blow us away. It simply DOESNT get better than this (except all the other BH). It’s sad pitchfork doesn’t properly rate albums anymore. Each year that goes by is a downward bias. Can you imagine what this would have been rated before Teen Dream?
Beach House is the only band where I have always liked their new album better than the previous ones )including, especially, TYLS) even if it takes a few months. Always venerate the prior ones but they always manage to create a new one that feels URGENTLY of the moment and so fresh it’s uncanny. 7 took no time at all to become my “favorite.”
Beach House the introduction Devotion the old movie you see when you close your eyes Teen Dream for youth and lovers Bloom for power, ambition and soul Depression Cherry for the deepest intimate beauty TYLS for unexpected joy, stories and romance 7 for eternity I’m so obsessed with this album I don’t to do. (Also the iTunes masters are so much better than the SoundCloud stream - wish I hadn’t listened to it)
BINGO. First thing I thought when I saw the cover. Damn. Do we have to wait another year for the next Deerhunter album? :'-(
God, are you guys kidding? I love Arcade Fire more than anything holy, but that video is hackneyed and not even well shot. I don't get the buzz over this director. Oblivion was stunning because of Claire's spunk and spontaneity, and the concepts behind it. This video and the one for "Yet Again" are terribly heavy-handed. (And Latino life in Los Angeles is a very interesting subject... like 15 years ago.) Going back to watch Reflektor's video to wash my eyes.
You do realize that Halcyon Digest essentially means 'THIS ALBUM IS ABOUT NOSTALGIA'? Agree WEC was very interesting though. I'm so excited for them to produce a tougher album, as much as I have listened to HD an inappropriate number of times.
RIGHT. These albums are better than "Shields". LOL: 15 El-P – Cancer For Cure (Fat Possum) 14 Chromatics – Kill For Love (Italians Do It Better) 13 Godspeed You! Black Emperor – Allelujah! Don’t Bend! Ascend! (Constellation) 12 Miguel – Kaleidoscope Dream (RCA) 11 Tame Impala – Lonerism (Modular) 10 Dirty Projectors – Swing Lo Magellan (Domino) 09 Chairlift – Something (Columbia) 08 The Walkmen – Heaven (Fat Possum) 07 Japandroids – Celebration Rock (Polyvinyl) 06 Cloud Nothings – Attack On Memory (Carpark) 05 Jessie Ware – Devotion (PMR) 04 Swans – The Seer (Young God)
Why the hell is Grizzly Bear being panned everywhere? Way better than Veckatimest and I can't think of any album besides Fiona's or Frank's that I liked more this year.
Grizzly Bear's "Shields" is such a close second that I wish Stereogum let you vote for more than one :(
Fiona Apple, The Idler Wheel As great as Frank Ocean's album is, there's just no competition. Fiona's album is so deep, infinitely listenable, and virtuosic vocals + lyrics + musical writing and performance. It's been a great year, but as someone who tends to wear good albums out, this is the only one I have been able to continue listening to again and again. Every song is perfect, not a single misstep.
Sadly warm crimes are not as bad as war crimes.
Google invested in ContentID because it had to after facing billions in infringement claims on YouTube and other sites. And Google still gets away with murder on other websites, including all the Google AdWords revenue on third party piracy sites. Google's job is to do the least it has to do to comply with the law while still profitting from piracy. Google makes money on free content, so why would they lobby to stop that? The fact is, the U.S. govt could force them to block piracy websites, just like they force Google to block other sensitive sites -- searches for classified documents, etc -- or just like Google censors its own results (not showing videos of warm crimes on YouTube, for instance). Google is not some benevolent, or at best, independent operator providing us a great service. They are a company benefitting from piracy and theft of creative works, music included.
I've read Stereogum for 8 years and though I rarely comment, I have to say this is the best article I've seen posted here yet. Bravo -- a great call to action. The only thing missing, I'd say, is a mention of real legal solutions that could be implemented to stop music piracy. But we don't have the political will (or perhaps capital) to implement them. It doesn't help that Google makes billions off piracy and can spend a fraction of that to lobby the U.S. govt.
To be clear, I am not for banning gay marriage... my sentence structure needs some help this "morning". I just don't understand the strong hatred of NC when nearly every other state has done it regardless of the geography, political leanings, etc. I think what's angering is America, not a particular state.
AHHH STOP WITH THE NORTH CAROLINA! They're the 31st state to ban gay marriage, so in a way, they should be applauded for taking so long. Seriously, even the bluest of states, California, has banned it. I'm not sure why I'm getting angry.
totally agree RE: trying too hard. her live performances (granted i only saw her at sxsw where she was exhausted... but she would walk off stage apologizing. what??) and interviews make her seem totally unsure what she's doing. i guess it produces good art now and then. but it's weird to enjoy her music and then see her talking on youtube like she's your needy, under-confident friend who checks her iphone a lot. i've stopped watching/listening to anything she doesn't release in a formal fashion
His Coachella set (weeknd 2) was a "I could take it or leave it" situation. Glad to hear the Hollywood Forever set was better. (Also: interesting venue??)
