ya'll should read Mötley Crüe's The Dirt: Confessions of the World's Most Notorious Rock Band bc there's a ton of crazy shit in there. this barely scratches the surface. TW: extreme misogyny, domestic violence. fuck that dumb TV show read a book
Bangs was an addict. yes, he was a lot of things but show some fucking respect.
ps: i love your work tom, read, and look forward to it always. this just felt like a bummer.
damn, tom. i wanted you to go into the art movement of De Stijl the record is named for: a Dutch movement dedicated and restricted by form and color, the use of black, white, and primary colors, and only vertical and horizontal lines to simplify structure. check out that cover. you discuss the layers of the band (they aren't siblings, but are divorced. bonus: jack took meg's last name.) but don't go into them. maybe because some of it is old news by now? TWS are such a high concept art rock band, in addition to being pure garage rock inspired by black american blues. i wanted so much more from this piece. you hint at it but never deliver the details TWS painstakingly took to *be* The White Stripes. counterpoint: KUDOS for highlighting Meg's drumming skills. her master of extreme basics is what allows Jack to go where he does as an instrumentalist. she's been underappreciated for too long.
i knew he had to actually acknowledge the world eventually...! it's full of loose chatter-- jazz chatter!--and meaninglessness bob acknowledging questions without answering them. i love it. i'll take it! ...but what _do_ i do with him liking The Eagles lol
curious how bob dylan made this list at such a high number even though it hasn't been released yet (out 6/19) ....the anticipation is killing me
not sure the quarantine is the right head space to dose (at least not here in nyc, there goes my tripping season). but here's hoping a mainstream, accessible doc about celebs cracking open and losing ego and identity will inspire more people to eat acid! im here for the psychedelic resurgence
cate blanchett did it already
oh god *is* Blank Space the joke and Welcome To New York actually a try bc its good and i don't know what to think now
by these comments, i honestly can't tell if this is a joke. i hate it. if it's real, Lou Reed rolled over in his grave because this is so awful it makes me sad. if it's a joke (?) this is the dumbest thing i've ever heard.
it is known that Kim Fowley raped Jackie Fox of The Runaways, maybe most famously in Cherie Currie's memoir, Neon Angel. but Currie wrote as if it was a groupie and not Jackie Fox. its not the fault of Cherie or Joan because they did not speak out against it or try to stop it. rape is the fault of the rapist and no one else. Kim Fowley is a rapist and a monster and his coverage in places like Pitchfork, the praise he received in NYT Obit, and in Rolling Stone as an "icon", "Svengali", and "legend" say nothing about assault, young girls, or rape. the press covers what they want to cover. i say, cover the story straight. give us the facts about his life. we are still covering up for men in death. if he was a songwriter, producer, *and* rapist, why not say it? also consider how far he spreads and his work with Ariel Pink. influence matters.
the internet is my master. i will do what it tells me to do. thank you, Music Internet.
"brother Kendrick Lamar. he's not a rapper. he's a writer." KING KENDRICK. over and over and over again.
i haven't heard this record yet (other than the two singles) and i already love it. i can't wait to listen to it for a month. thanks, tom, for a great review. and, jack, if you read this in your next life, find my if you need a biographer/sex slave.
this video is super excellent. social commentary and beauty haven't lived in such close quarters in a LONG TIME. WE EXIST.
a) i can't wait to see what Stickles has to say about this article b) i love Stickles c) i once wrote a review of one of his live shows, he twitter attacked me, we came out friends d) i can't wait for the rock opera e) agreed, re: Stickles' WTF podcast is one of the best Maron has ever done
Carl, what you've written here is a perfect, absolutely perfect, dissection of the White Stripes. i've encountered MANY people who write them off (read: haters) who don't understand the simplicity and the concept of the band. you hit the nail on the head and let the cat out of the bag, over and over. everything about this is aces. it's fucking magic. this list is pretty much singles, for the most part (and all excellent ones at that) which i am annoyed by and still not surprised by. my favorite due to Jack's ability to rhyme words, use syllables, have breath control and just the fucking riff is "Girl, You Have No Faith in Medicine" - probably the most underrated White Stripes song of all time. that and "Blue Orchid" should be on here because it kicks fucking ass.
this album is aces and this article is aces
