Yeah I always prefer genre-based lists, it makes more sense. I'd also say that the reason metal is on a separate list is because for the most part it has not merged with pop/mainstream culture, unlike hip-hop or electronica for instance, so no one is bothered when you put hip-hop on a list along with rock, pop, electro. It's probably a little different if you try doing that with metal, especially death metal because somehow black metal is kind of trendy (relatively speaking).
Not a metal album (and before anyone points it out, yeah there are other non-metal albums in this list).
What this list and every metal year-end list needs though is the new Desolate Shrine. This album slays.
This album made me a PJ fan back when it came out and it hit me so hard as a teen that I can't possibly have any objective opinion of it, nor can I have a favorite song or moment. It's just a part of me. Yet I probably won't ever listen to it again. I stayed with this band longer than the main audience I guess (which means I didn't quit after Vitalogy) but their recent output — starting with the self-titled — doesn't resonate at all with me and it kind of took me out of the "fans" crow. Vitalogy, Yield and Binaural are their most interesting albums to me and probably the only ones I would want to listen again.
As to Vedder's voice, he still has this special something, but only on quiet, acoustic numbers. Into The Wild was great. The Ukulele thing, though, not so much.
The review itself seems much harsher that the score would indicate.

Pretty fantastic mixtape. Incantation, Inquisition, Ulver, Leviathan... and the rest. Top notch. I kind of hate that I'm gonna have to go to Pitchfork now in order to read your column. Thanks for Haunting the Chapel anyway.
I'm not really holding my breath for Mastodon and Opeth. What else is coming? Yob should rule, and shouldn't Absu have a new one this year as well? If so, I'm looking for it.
Also, US Christmas new one maybe not be exactly metal but it is quite good.

Although I have to say I didn't care for Necros Christos, Burzum or Altar of Plagues.
I can't complain with Ulcerate, Tombs, Primordial and Krallice making the top 10.
Here's my mandatory "where's _____???" though: where's Mitochondrion??? Maybe there's a limit on the amount of Profound Lore releases one is allowed to include on a list (full stream of the album on mitochondrion.ca btw)
