Wow, this is very good. As Michael_ alluded to above, I was expecting a percussion-heavy electronic track with a tribal touch. Instead I found a warm, melodic song with a deep, glowing bassline. The arpeggiated brass synth at various points is almost reminiscent of Portishead's "The Rip," but this Liars track is not nearly as ominous. In fact, it's quite the opposite. Colour me intrigued.
It's amazing that even after all these years, these two wreckers of civilisation are still at it and just as relevant as ever. It's also nice to see them embracing the next wave of subversive musicians like Nik Kolk and the rest of Factory Floor. I'm eagerly awaiting "Transverse."
"Never Say Die" touched me in a very strange way. As a whole, I definitely enjoyed "Reign of Terror" more than I wanted to admit at first. After hearing it all the way through a few times now, I can say that I'm really liking it and I'll be listening to it a whole lot more during the upcoming months.
I prefer her other singles, but that probably speaks more to my lovelorn disposition today than to the track itself. This is a seemingly fun and playful way to garner some good press on this St. Valentine's day. Now when's that album coming out, Charli? I'm sure I'm not the only one anticipating her first LP.
Je dois admettre que je n'ai jamais entendu de Mlle. Sokolinski mais sa musique est plutôt belle. Ca ferait de la bonne musique pour un Dimanche matin paresseux durant l'été.
I find this album, much like Trust's "TRST," to be utterly bewitching and intoxicating. Both of these albums do much to confirm my suspicion that Canadians are making some of the best subversive electronic pop around.
I'm really loving this. It's not a whole lot different from the first album, but it's melting my face as I type this (on my second listen through). The last track, "Golden Silence," is simply fantastic and is one of the many highlights to be found here. It seems like these sisters didn't miss a beat even with the departure of Michael Collins. Oh, and that picture is ridiculous in a fantastic way.
Stereogum: you should really put a warning up there advising people that once they hear this, they can't unhear it. The inclusion of lyrics is a nice touch though.
Zola Jesus is easily my favourite current singer / musician so I may be a little biased. I approached this album with the voracious appetite of a hundred hungry lions and I was thrilled to discover that it completely satiated me. I plan on buying this and listening to it over and over. The latter half of the album is especially powerful and carries great weight. It's hard to pick a favourite track, but the leading candidates for me so far are "In Your Nature" and "Collapse." What a unique talent!
Not bad, but I really thought HEALTH would add something more to it than just vocals. The rest of it is pretty faithful to the original. I guess I prefer covers that deviate from the original. Again, not a bad effort but I feel like they could've done more with it.
I have to admit that I'm not too keen on much of first disc, but the last five or six tracks on the second disc absolutely make the entire album for me. Bravo! Well done, Mr. Gonzalez.
